This is South Carolina Football 2017

Jul 19, 2017, 9:24 AM

I tried to compile all the various versions of this and updated the numbers through 2017, and added new teams to the ACC and SEC. If a more up-to-date version exists out there, please forgive.

THIS IS SOUTH CAROLINA FOOTBALL

In the 72 seasons South Carolina has been affiliated with a conference, they have won that conference once...the ACC in 1969, with a 7-4 record. Since the Associated Press began ranking football teams in 1936, the Gamecocks have finished in the Top 20 of the rankings only 8 times in those 80 years. South Carolina has finished in the Top 10 of a major recognized poll...THREE times, in 2011, 2012 and 2013, the best seasons in their entire history with 11 wins. In 2011 the entire team received rings for going 11-2 and for finishing a tough, hard fought 5th place in the SEC. As they say in tee ball, everyone is a winner. This is South Carolina football.

The 1st year of Gamecock football was in 1892, South Carolina won its first bowl game 103 years later under BRAD SCOTT. In 125 seasons of football, South Carolina has never participated in a pre-BCS major bowl (Rose, Fiesta, Orange, Cotton, and Sugar), never received a BCS invite during the BCS era and has yet to be chosen for the College Football Playoff (or Access bowls).

As South Carolina set to begin its 126th season of collegiate football, they have won 11 or more games in a single season only 3 times. In 125 seasons, South Carolina has won more games than it lost only 58 times. In 125 seasons, South Carolina has won more than 6 games in a season 25 times, and lost 6 or more 40 times. This is South Carolina football.

South Carolina has had 34 different head coaches in its storied tradition...only six of them have stayed longer than 5 seasons, while 22 of them have losing records. “It’s another Carolina Touchdown!?”…not quite. Of the 56 programs, which have played more than 1000 games all-time, only four have scored fewer points than South Carolina in their schools history. This is South Carolina football.

Since joining the SEC in 1992, South Carolina has had a winning record in the conference 7 times in 25 years. Although South Carolina has yet to win the SEC, they have finished 0-8 in the conference twice. South Carolina has won six conference games in a season only 3 times. Only Kentucky, Ole Miss, and Vanderbilt have less 6 conference win seasons. This is South Carolina football.

Of the most memorable moments in their history is the fact that South Carolina went 2 consecutive seasons without winning one conference game. That’s right, not one. Carolina had an impressive string of 21 consecutive games with a loss snapped in 2000 by beating New Mexico State (and to let the rest of the country know what South Carolina football was all about, their fans commenced to tear down the goal-posts. No, I am not kidding). This is South Carolina football.

Since 1992, only 3 times has any non-probation member of the conference failed to win 2 or more games overall in a season…South Carolina has accomplished this feat 3 times, Kentucky once. Since 1992, only once has a conference member failed to win a game overall in a single season…you guessed it, South Carolina. South Carolina’s all-time record versus other current conference members is even more impressive:

Alabama 4-12 UGA 18-49-2 Ole Miss 7-8 Tennessee 8-25-2
Arkansas 9-12 Kentucky 16-10-1 Mississippi St 9-7 Texas A&M 0-3
Auburn 1-10-1 LSU 2-18-1 Missouri 3-2 Vanderbilt 20-4
Florida 8-26-3

That’s correct, South Carolina leads the all-time series against 4 SEC teams...Kentucky, Miss St., Missouri and Vanderbilt. This is South Carolina football.

But, the comparison of only 25 seasons in one conference does no justice to the tradition of South Carolina football. Comparing the Gamecocks record versus D-1A schools they have played 15 or more times:

Clemson 42-68-4 Duke 17-24-3 FSU 3-16 Ga Tech 9-12
Maryland 11-17 Miami 6-8-2 UNC 19-34-4 NC State 27-26-4
Virginia 21-13-1 Va Tech 11-7-2 WF 34-20-2 Alabama 4-12
Arkansas 9-12 Kentucky 16-10-1 LSU 2-18-1 Ole Miss 7-8
Miss St 9-7 Florida 8-26-3 UGA 18-49-2 Tennessee 8-25-2

That’s correct, South Carolina leads the all-time series against 5 of these 12 teams... Kentucky, NC State, Va Tech, Virginia and Wake Forest. This is South Carolina football.

Gamecock fans justify their horrible football record thru the strength of the SEC conference. But let’s look at the Gamecock’s record against the other big 5 conferences. South Carolina is 191-234-22 vs the ACC, 4-7 vs the Big 12, 7-4 vs the Big Ten and 1-1 vs Pac12. This is South Carolina Football.

After consecutive bowl appearances in 2000 and 2001, South Carolina was coming off of their most successful two year run in the programs history. The Gamecocks 17 wins during that period was the most by any South Carolina team over a two-year span. Only 17 other current D-1A schools that have fielded a team 15 or more seasons have failed to win 18 or more games in consecutive seasons.

Carolina was going to keep the momentum and 2002 was the season that the ##### would breakthrough and finally surpass Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida. They would finally get over the hump to capture the Eastern Division Championship. They had two Heisman candidates in the same backfield, Pinnock and Jenkins. They mixed up all the ingredients to produce another sub .500 record, and another 0-for against the Big 3 from the East, and another loss to in-state rival Clemson. The Carolina Heisman candidate at RB finished with less than 50 yards per game rushing, and the Heisman candidate at QB finished the season at DB. But, wait there is always next year.

2003 would be the year that Holtz previous recruiting seasons would begin to pay dividends. The team no longer had any cancers and was again united. Team unity, young stars, and maturity at QB would get South Carolina back to a New Years Day Bowl game. Their most hated rival would be down and a Carolina victory at home on the seasons last game would likely lead to the departure of the rival coaching staff. The best High School Running Back to ever step on a field made a pledge in February to attend South Carolina, and bring glory to Columbia. That running back ended the season by leading the team with 58 yards per game rushing in his first season in Columbia - 3 Freshmen Running Backs in the conference were better. Their QB, who had matured, and finally had a grasp of the offense? He finished with the lowest completion percentage in the conference, as well as the fewest yards. Again, it was a sub .500 record overall, 2-6 in the conference, another 0-for against the Big 3 from the East. And the season finale that would send your in-state rival back to the drawing board and end the coaching career of Tommy Bowden instead ended in a 46-point home loss, 63-17.

Seventeen of Twenty-two starters returned for 2004, and with it came high expectations. Returning was your entire offensive backfield. You brought in a new defensive coordinator who was going to implement a new scheme that would be a better fit for your young defensive talent. On offense, Lou took over play calling duties and was supposed take Carolina to the top by grinding it out on the ground. And when their Senior QB would be presented with the situation when he must throw, Coach Holtz said he was going to shock the conference.
The season began with a blowout win over Vanderbilt, and a 16-point lead midway through the second quarter over highly touted Georgia. But, then the reality of what the true description of South Carolina football is occurred, South Carolina wouldn't score again until the South Florida game. When the season ended, this group of Gamecocks etched their name next to failures of the past. Once again South Carolina failed to reach the post season. Once again, they ended conference play without a winning record. For the third season in a row they went 0-4 against the big three from the East and in state rival Clemson. The lopsided defeats in the 2004 contests against these four teams brought the total point differential margin to 191 points that Carolina has been outscored by in those four rivalry games over the last three seasons. South Carolina has allowed 23 or more points in nine of those games, and scored 23 or more only once. The Quarterback who was going to "shock the conference" didn't make it to the third game of the season. Gamecock players gave Coach Holtz an early retirement gift during the final contest of the season in a 22-point loss to Clemson by delaying the game nearly ten minutes midway through the fourth quarter. The reason for the delay was frustrated South Carolina players started an ugly on-field altercation. The actions led to a post season ban by the University. A team that had positioned itself to accomplish what only 11 teams before them had accomplished, instead took their place in Gamecock history as the 100th team that failed to reach post season. Coach Holtz called the scene, his "biggest disappointment." For many it was just another chapter of "This is South Carolina football."

On November 23, 2004, South Carolina named Steve Spurrier as the schools Head Football Coach. Spurrier brings to South Carolina a .777 college winning percentage. His resume includes six SEC titles, one ACC title, and one national championship. Coach Spurrier holds the mark with the all-time highest winning percentage in SEC play. Spurrier will also bring to Columbia the highest expectations in the schools history. Spurrier finished in the Final AP Top 15 twelve consecutive seasons at Florida, so that is what we should expect at South Carolina. Spurrier had a career record of 11-1 against Georgia while at the Gator helm, so that is what we should expect at South Carolina. Gamecock players have greeted Coach Spurrier's arrival in emblematic Carolina fashion with an abundance of team rules violations and felony arrests. In January, six players were charged after a total of $18,000 worth of computer and video equipment and framed photographs were taken from South Carolina's stadium in late November. The incident resulted in Offensive Lineman Woody Telfort being charged with a felony count of grand larceny, and numerous other charges against players. On March 1st leading rusher Demetris Summers was dismissed from the team. A day later, Tackle Kevin Mainord was arrested for stealing televisions from dorm rooms. Defensive End Moe Thompson was also arrested on similar charges six days later. On April 16th, two more Gamecock players, Josh Johnson and Ty Erving, were arrested and charged with simple marijuana possession. Less than two weeks later, WR David Smith pled guilty to third degree burglary. In late May, Linebacker Dustin Lindsey was charged with DUI. On June 23rd, Cory Boyd was dismissed from the team. In all, twelve players have been arrested in the 2005 calendar year. It's been a typical Gamecock off season. But, all will be suppressed in less than two months, when 111 years of South Carolina's losing tradition will be changed. The man who will single handedly change the program has arrived in Columbia sounds similar to what we were told before Holtz' arrival. When Spurrier accepted the job to lead the Gamecocks, he commented, "they really haven't ever done much here." No kidding Steve, welcome to South Carolina football.

In 2007 the Gamecocks got off to a roaring 6-1 start after beating #12 Georgia and #8 Kentucky. Surely this would be the year that all the Gamecock faithful had been yearning for. It was finally the “Next Year”! But hold the presses. After beating #8 Kentucky and garnering a rank as high as #6 in the country, those Gamecocks lost to lowly Vanderbilt that started a Gamecock trademarked “fall from grace” to lose their last 5 games and finish 6-6 for the season. This is South Carolina football.

The very next season, in 2008, those South Carolina Gamecocks got right back up and at it again beginning the season with a 7-2 record. But again those BCS hopes were dashed by a 56-6 drumming by the Florida Gators. South Carolina would go on to lose their last 3 games of the season to finish 7-5. This is South Carolina football.

In 2009, with rival Clemson clinching the Atlantic Division in the ACC, the South Carolina Gamecocks had lost 3 straight and were sitting on a 6-5 record. When those Tigers came to town, those Gamecocks took advantage of turnovers and dampened the mood for the ACC Championship bound Tigers…. “Was this the end of the dreaded Chicken Curse?” the faithful coots prayed. But Ol’ Pitchfork Ben Tillman could only chuckle as UConn slammed the Gamecocks 20-7 in the Papa Johns.com bowl. This is South Carolina football.

In 2010 the Gamecocks got off to yet another historical start with a 9-3 record. They finally managed to win the SEC East division title. “This is it!” Gamecock fans exclaimed. “This is the moment that we have all been waiting for! The SEC Championship game in Atlanta!” The gamecocks, as 9-3 SEC East Champions, hoped to defeat Auburn in the SEC Championship game for their first conference title since winning the ACC in 1969! But that was not to be as Auburn pounded the Gamecocks 56-17 to set the largest margin of defeat in an SEC Championship game. The Gamecocks would go on to lose the Chick Fil A bowl to Florida State 26-17. This is South Carolina football.

As starting QB for South Carolina from 2009-2011, Stephen Garcia had managed 3 arrests, 5 different suspensions and never missed one minute of playing time. In the summer of 2011, the reason behind Garcia’s behavior and lack of punishment became crystal clear to all the critics. An incident occurred that explained everything to those wondering how a young man could get away with so much. With Garcia already serving an indefinite suspension for violation of team rules, on July 26th, 2011 Quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus was arrested in Greenville, SC after urinating on Main Street. G.A. was immediately suspended indefinitely by Coach Spurrier. Seven days later both G.A. and Garcia were reinstated to the team on the same day, just in time for the start of fall camp. This is South Carolina football.

The 2011 season brought yet another heart break for those poor Gamecocks. In 2011 the Gamecocks went 11-2 with a bowl win over Nebraska. However, they became the first collegiate football team in history to defeat all of their division rivals but still lose their division. They also became the first team in history to defeat all of their division rivals and finish 5th or worse in overall conference play. "But that's ok", they say. "We have our 5th place rings." This is South Carolina football.

In 2012, the Fighting Gamecocks once again beat the SEC East division winner only to be left out of the SECCG once again. This is South Carolina Football.

2013 started out with a great optimism for Gamecock nation but was brought to reality quickly after a loss to UGA, who lost to Clemson the week before. Jadeveon Clowney, the best football player who ever lived, sandbagged his way to a mediocre season and NFL draft as he blames his 15 different high school injuries on his lack of production. He is made fun of on national TV. When things couldn’t get any worse, SC loses to a pathetic Tennessee team on a last minute field goal. The up and down season drove Coach Spurrier to drink as he filmed a coaches show drunk. The Gamecocks, once again defeating the eventual SEC East Champion, were left out of a trip to Atlanta. Meanwhile, rival Clemson became the first and only team from the state of SC to play in and win a BCS game. This is South Carolina Football.

The 2014 season, as usual in Columbia, began with the gamecocks being August Pre-season National Champions. The Gamecocks were #9 in preseason polls and picked to win the SEC east by most and the SEC Championship by some. A great optimism surrounded the first game in which SC faced Texas A&M. The game was at home and was the inaugural game to introduce the much anticipated SEC Network. The Gamecocks were heavily favored and many didn’t give the Aggies a chance. That optimism soon turned to despair as SC allowed the first year Texas A&M QB to break passing yard records and gave up 680 total yards. The Gamecocks were embarrassed on national TV in front of millions 52-28. This is South Carolina Football.

The Gamecocks, still delusional as could be went on to beat a tough ECU and squeaked out a win against UGA. It was now clear that the Texas A&M game was a fluke. The Gamecocks would surely run the table and be included in the 2014 playoffs. That was not to be. The Gamecocks went on to lose the next 4 out of 6 games, including juggernaut Kentucky. The Gamecocks would give up several big leads late in the 4th quarter on the way to a 4-5 record. This is South Carolina Football.

But all was not lost. The Gamecocks, having defeated a tough 5-3 Florida in OT, still had Clemson to play. And the Gamecocks just knew their streak of 5 wins over the Tigers would go to 6 wins in 2014. After all, there was just no way the over rated defense of Clemson would beat the best offense in SC history. And surely struggling QB Cole Stoudt or hurt freshman phenom Deshaun Watson would never be able to score enough points. SC was destined to finish 7-5 and make it to a decent bowl game.

Unfortunately for the feathered kind, they were sorely mistaken. Clemson QB Deshaun Watson, playing with a torn ACL, became the first Clemson true freshman to beat the gamecocks passing for 269 yards, 2 TDs and rushing for 2 more. Three different Clemson freshman had break out numbers against the Gamecocks, including a record setting day by Artavis Scott. No, the Gamecocks didn’t run their streak to 6 but they did achieve 6 in a different way. A 6-6 record, even with the best offense in SC history. This is South Carolina Football.

Now, with the bowl season right around the corner, the South Carolina Gamecocks sit and wait anxiously to see if any bowl will be willing to invite them. With a 6-6 record and having lost to other 6-6 SEC teams the Gamecocks could very well be staying home for Christmas. From #9 to 6-6, This is South Carolina Football.

"They play in the toughest division, in the toughest league in that nation- I don't think Spurrier wins the SEC or the national title. I don't care if he coaches here 400 years!" -Lee Corso

It's called The Pink Pony, what could possibly go wrong at a fine establishment like that? Plus, Abraham is such a good role model anyway- He was arrested in 2003 on DWI charges on Long Island, N.Y.; in September 2012 on obstruction charges in Atlanta; and in June 2014 on DUI charges in DeKalb County, Ga. http://www.sportingnews.com/nfl/story/2015-06-29/john-abraham-wanted-battery-charge-nfl-atlanta-falcons-arizona-cardinals-new-york-jets?eadid=SOC%2FFB%2FSNMain
