showing no fear in their out-of-conference scheduling here lately. A quick check shows Clemson in 2021, Oregon in 2022, Oklahoma in 2023, Clemson again in 2024, and teams like Ohio St, Texas, etc, after that. Toss those games on top of their SEC schedule, and that's pretty freaking impressive.

Add in conference foes like Vandy, South Carolina, Mizzou, Kentucky, Tenn, and they've got themselves a top 100 schedule.

you throw out the bottom feeders, and I counter with Bama, LSU, Florida, Auburn, A&M, etc. But we didn't play a single team in the regular season that finished ranked, until we hit the playoffs. That's why we were worried about CFP seeding last year even though undefeated. We need somebody in the ACC to step up... FSU, Miami, VaT, somebody. Otherwise, we really need good OOC games. Or to put it another way, we needed this game worse than UGA did. And that's a fact.

a blowout over Wyoming means nothing. A close win over Jawjuh is huge. Even a close loss to a (probable) Top 5 team is better... it's early enough in the year to overcome later.

The article says that Kirby is anticipating an expanded playoff by the end of the decade.
In that case a challenging early season OOC game could have extra reward and reduced risk for an SEC team. Though Oregon didn't find that to be true in 2019 in the current format.

Early season ... late season - Don't think that come into the decision.
The early season games are easier to schedule in any reason period of time ... bottom line.
