Surgery for a sprain? Seriously?

Oct 20, 2019, 8:45 PM

I'm sorry...the game isn't that big...or that important. So, Tua has a paid education and two 'stronger' ankles because of the surgery. Anyone else on Bama had a high ankle sprain and the 'curing' surgery? Heck...anyone at other institutions?

Frankly, this is disgusting. Winning means that much?

I’m that slow, but how do you operate on a sprain?

I think it's called the 'tighten up'...but

LOL! I remember when I first heard that song, I thought

Oct 21, 2019, 11:50 AM [ in reply to Archie Bell and the Drells say hello from ]

they were saying "Music Detectives", not "Houston, Texas".

There are whole websites out there about misheard song lyrics. One in particular is "Kiss the Sky", which is the original lyric in Hendrix "Purple Haze". So many people thought he was saying "Kiss this Guy" that he changed it in later live performances. :)

drill a hole through the bone and screw a plate to the bone

Oct 20, 2019, 8:51 PM [ in reply to Re: Surgery for a sprain? Seriously? ]

the plate is then tied to the other side of the bone with a wire. They can get him back quicker and don't have to wait for it to heal on it's own.

Thanks Neal. Hadn’t an idea that was a thing.

I could be wrong, but I’m not sure ours would do the same?? Sounds varsity blue-ish...

It's actually a very innovative procedure that does wonders to stabilize the ligament while pretty much allowing the athlete to return much quicker than left to heal on it's own. I should know - I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night AND watched the youtube procedure. Pretty slick.

Re: Surgery for a sprain? Seriously?

If t were me or my child, I’d prefer to wait a few more weeks and let it heal naturally rather than having a foreign object implanted in the body.

I agree, long term quality of life for the next 80 years for Tua is more important than a few weeks of football.

No medical experience ...

Oct 20, 2019, 8:55 PM

So here is a cut & paste:

”For severe high ankle sprains, or in cases where a ligament is torn through completely, surgery may be appropriate. The standard procedure is to insert a screw between the tibia and fibula to hold the two bones together, which relieves pressure on the ligaments and allows them to scar and heal.“

I'm pretty sure that the Auburn D will be well versed on his injury ( as in where to hit Tua to do the most damage ) by their game.

Just another indicator of how the NFL has influenced college sports.......... pay for play, needless surgery, etc.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Surgery for a sprain? Seriously?

Oct 21, 2019, 2:28 PM

It definitely seems like a short sighted knee jerk reaction, and I'm not sure if Tua is really thinking through the potential long term impact of these surgeries. He could easily get into the NFL and become one of those injury ridden players, and if that happens he's not going to be making the big bucks. Doing this seems like he's taken a big risk in my opinion, but then I'm not paid millions of dollars to coach or give him advice. So that's just my 2 cents.
