Womens basketball use to have their games just before men's

Jan 25, 2018, 9:48 PM

Back in 1970's our women's basketball games would end just before the men's team played. That guaranteed a pretty good crowd towards the end of the women's game. Why don't we do this anymore. We are NOT a women's basketball school and their attendance will not be very good unless you piggyback on the men's games.

i was at CU from aug 72- dec 77 (including grad school). i don't remember more than a handful of women's/men's doubleheaders. in fact for the 72-73 season Fr were ineligible and we had a freshman team that played immediately before the men. in 73-74 Fr were eligible to play varsity (tree rollins was in that Fr class). but we still had a Fr team and they played before the varsity that year. most of the Fr, outside of tree, would play the FR game and then dress for the varsity game, sometimes getting a few minutes of action in blowouts.i became a season tix holder for the 78-79 season... and i just don't remember the women playing DIRECTLY before the men's game. sometimes the women might play at say 1 pm and the men at 7pm. i'm old.. .but that's how i remember it.

These double headers happenned quite often in early 80's.

I think the reason it does not happen now is because many women's games are on tv, especially on Sunday.

I was there from '79 until '83 and I remember the double headers. It was great because they would open the doors earlier.

That and I got to see Barbara Kenndy play...the woman could shoot the ball.

I thought WBB didn't start till '76

That might explain not remembering them playing.

The women's games are televised on Sunday and then midweek. There are enough good women's teams to make it profitable for espn to carry these games.

I believe this changed because of title 9 legislation requiring womens scholarships and athletic team participation to be equal to men. Womens sports had to bring in their own revenue stream. So they have to sell tickets just like the men. No more double headers via a single ticket.

No school does that anymore. Scheduling would be a

I don't see that logic. Would only need one schedule for

both teams, seems it would make it a lot easier. I'm not saying that's the best idea, just that from a scheduling standpoint, it would be simple.
