What would keep an owner from going after DW4?

Jan 8, 2021, 12:28 AM

If you had plenty of cash and needed the best QB in the league, could he be bought out?

Well sure, if money was no object and you needed a QB, there's no reason NOT to, lol.

Generally though, teams that are in need of said stud QB aren't in the "money is no object" game...

If you had plenty of cash or trade options. The point being DW is unhappy with latest hires, he’s frustrated with a poor team performance, yet he puts up exceptional numbers. Why wouldn’t an owner knock himself out for that kind of leader?

face if Deshaun were to be traded to New England. His unhappiness over recent hires is BECAUSE they had Patriot ties. At least that is what you gather from reading what has been said and inferred publicly. (By writers, not by me.)

Note: This would be completely contrary to the Evil Empire's mode of operation anyway. They normally trade AWAY young players rather than give them the big, long term contracts. Brady was the only real notable exception to that rule. That may have been Kraft overruling Belichick, we'll probably never know.

From what I read he was unhappy because ownership came to him and asked his opinion on potential names for head coach and GM, and then turned around and hired a GM without even considering the names he offered, or asking his opinion on the person they did hire.

That would have been a mistake on the part of ownership

to begin with. As much as I love Deshaun, he is just a player, and should not be brought into conversations that affect not only him, but many other players. "Teachers Pets" always generate resentment among the others.

Tepper at Carolina could afford it. He's the richest owner in the NFL.

It isn’t about the cash though. He’s signed to a multiyear deal and so you’d have to give up multiple draft picks which would likely include multiple 1st round picks to get him.

That sort of trade would likely put him in a similar situation that he’s already in. One of the main problems with Houston right now is they don’t have any 1st round picks. Any team in need of a QB that badly is also not likely to be a good team currently.

Yeah the only way to get him would involve destroying your salary cap and mortgaging your future by giving up a bunch of picks. That would ultimately lead to him being in a situation similar to where he is now.

Houston has no 1st or 2nd round pick this year, thanks to

Bill Effing O'Brien. The only team that has enough draft capital to make that deal this year would be Jacksonville. They have two 1st round picks and two 2nd round picks this year due to prior trades. I could see them giving the Texans essentially Trevor Lawrence, another 1, and a 2. It would take something like that to make it attractive enough for the Texans to part ways with DW4.

The question the Jags would have to answer for themselves is, is a proven franchise commodity at QB worth a "can't miss" rookie franchise QB, and potentially two other franchise players that could be drafted with those other two picks. That is a lot of capital to spend, even for a top 3 QB just now approaching the prime of his career.

Jags likely have no interest in a trade like that within their division....

Jan 8, 2021, 9:49 PM

It’s one thing to do business with a team that you don’t see as often, but these teams play twice a year....doubt either one wants to do that sort of deal.
I guess Miami may have a couple of first rounders....but they probably are banking on Tua improving,

Money. Isn’t his salary next year like 40 or 50 million? Great for him, but the downside is that that it takes a major chunk out of the salary cap, so there Iare less $ to spend on surrounding him with other high dollar talent.
