What happened to breaking the plane?

Jan 2, 2021, 12:02 AM

I've seen running backs fumble into the end zone be ruled a touchdown because the ball broke the plane for .25 seconds.

that call made zero sense

rogers had the ball foot down then they knocked the ball out.

Dumb### official said “must survive the hit”. Anybody ever heard of that rule?

I heard that a lot in NFL catch controversy last year

I didn’t know college adopted the standard. I clearly hasn’t been the standard for years earlier.

I agree - Amari had possession and I thought that was how it was supposed to go.

Water under the bridge now but hey it was just that kind of night for Clemson

Agree on the bad call, add it to the long list of marginal officiating tonight. First, we did not lose tonight because of the marginal to crappy officiating.

That call should have been:

1. Clear possession of the ball (a catch)
2. Established in the end zone (at least 1 foot down)

#3 met both of those criteria, the ball was knocked out of his hands after he was down on both feet with possession, there is no continuation in that case, no football move or act common to the game. He had the ball in his possession and came down on two feet and held the ball until it was knocked out of his hands...

The rules (from different sections)

a. Player Possession.
The ball is in player possession when a player has the ball firmly in his grasp
by holding or controlling it with hand(s) or arm(s) while contacting the
ground inbounds.

b. A player catches a forward pass in the opponent’s end zone (A.R. 5-1-3-I and II).

ARTICLE 3. a. To catch a ball means that a player:
1. Secures firm control with the hand(s) or arm(s) of a live ball in flight
before the ball touches the ground, and
2. Touches the ground in bounds with any part of his body, and then
3. Maintains control of the ball long enough to enable him to perform an
act common to the game, i.e., long enough to pitch or hand the ball,
advance it, avoid or ward off an opponent, etc., and
4. Satisfies paragraphs b, c, and d below.

b, c and d are about possession going to the ground so not applicable.

There is no "continuation" or minimum time for possession like the "football move" in the field, the play is dead on the catch and in the end zone...
