To all 50’s and 60’s graduates on this board. Did you

Oct 18, 2019, 6:16 PM

ever imagine the day would come where we are in this position? We all loved Frank Howard but all we ever hoped for was a 7-3 season and a possible bowl bid. There were a lot fewer bowls back then...Rose, Orange, Sugar and Gator. When I was in the ninth grade a buddy and I rode a Trailways bus to Miami to see us lose to Colorado in the Orange Bowl. Will never forget losing to LSU in the Sugar Bowl when we broke out our “Sugar Blue” jerseys only to lose 7-0 and they had Billy Cannon. Does this bring back memories???

Absolutely remember both games. We had a chance to tie LSU in NO but last a fumble late. Coach Howard told them at half in Orange Bowl game that if they did not play better--he would step down. Joel Wells and C. Bussey had great 2nd half games in Miami. Colorado rallied to pull it out.

Catching a Clemson game on TV was so rare. An event.

If people were as good as their obituary - and products were as good as advertised - this would truly be a wonderful world !!

I remember the LSU and Colorado games very well. You mentioned Billy Cannon for LSU. If I remember correctly, I think the big name for Colorado was also a running back named John The Beast Bayuk. Not sure about spelling of the last name. I started to Clemson in 1960 and finished in 1964.

It is really neat hearing y’all talk about this...

Oct 18, 2019, 10:42 PM

Did we really wear blue jerseys in the Sugar Bowl?! Navy Blue or some other shade?

Keep the stories coming!

https://clemsonsportstalk.com/s/239/with-flying-colors-clemsons-uniforms-their-history-their-stories

"In 1958, Clemson was going to play LSU in the 1959 Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. Everyone had black and white televisions at the time; there were no color sets like you have now. You'd be hard-pressed to find a black and white set now. The television executives at NBC wanted Clemson to wear a darker color because they wore orange and LSU liked to wear white at home. They were afraid no one would be able to tell who was Clemson and who was LSU so they came to Clemson and asked if they would wear a dark color. They didn't have a lot of time to see about it, and I guess the best coach Howard could do was order a dark blue jersey because I guess purple you would have to special order. He chose blue with white numerals, real broad numbers and an orange helmet with a stripe. That's what they did, and they became known as Sugar Bowl Blues. Of course, LSU beat Clemson just 7-0, they were ranked #1 in the country behind Billy Cannon. Clemson gave them a great game. I think Clemson had a bad snap and LSU eventually scored off of that, and that was the only score of the game, but Clemson played a great game that day. Then in 1962, some of the players talked Coach Howard into pulling out those Sugar Blues jerseys they had left over, and they wore them against South Carolina. Rodney Rogers kicked a field goal with about a minute and a half to go in the game, and Clemson claimed a 20-17 victory."

Not a 50s or 60s grad, but was there in the 60s

Oct 19, 2019, 8:42 AM

I hit town in 1966 as a second grader at the brand new Margaret Morrison Elementary School (since replaced). I learned early and was "storming" the field from the start. Us youngsters were begging for chin straps and sweat bands from the players. Buddy Gore was a prime target, but I had no luck. My biggest score was a sweat band from Jimmy Addison. I am sure he remembers me.

I learned decades later that the 1966 UVA game (40-35 Clemson win) was the first game for the Rock. Not sure if true, but I know the second graders were oblivious. We were just running around and sliding down the hill.

I honestly thought the 1967 team could have gone undefeated.

Oct 18, 2019, 11:59 PM

That was a heck of a team!

They ended up 6-4, but lost close heartbreakers to UGA and Bama at home, and couldn’t handle GA Tech and Auburn in the road.

Clemson 1965-1969. I don't recall ever imagining

Oct 19, 2019, 4:14 AM

Death Valley being enlarged, much less winning national championships.

Although we won the ACC title three of my four years, our end-all games were the South Carolina ones, as we weren't going bowling (nor were they.) Mostly, for home games we were more concerned about the CDA dances on Saturday evenings in the cafeteria. lol.
