These idiots who keep repeating flu deaths, car deaths etc...

Mar 16, 2020, 7:42 PM

Shut up. Stop it... this is not a hoax or A fabricated story. It’s real.... this virus is serious.

Has the flu scared all the leaders of the world before? Has the flu or car accidents made the globe shut down?

Stop it.... you clowns are almost....... almost as dumb as the ones that defend brownell.

so how many will die in US, maybe 250?

Or a 1000?

Re: Overdone fear but good caution imho considering other world viruses & deaths..

Mar 16, 2020, 8:12 PM

If Italy is any indication, we will probably hit 1000 deaths in a little over a week. US is doing a lot to curb it though, and since the biggest threat is the stress to our medical resources, slowing down the transmission might also significantly reduce the fatality rate. Time will tell, but I would predict we end up in the thousands before summer weather breaks it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Overdone fear but good caution imho considering other world viruses & deaths..

Mar 16, 2020, 8:26 PM

That outcome is contingent on widespread behavior change. If the US does nothing, 200k - 1M is what the models predict. Ridicule the protocol all you want but it will save tens of thousands of lives.

The most annoying part is if all the changes work and the virus is slowed, some people will feel even stronger that the precautions were unnecessary. But statistics are hard for some to grasp.

Mar 16, 2020, 10:18 PM [ in reply to A million deaths? LOL youre a fool.*** ]

A million deaths IF we all pretended nothing was happening and go about our lives as normal. The math isn’t even that difficult on that one, basic SRI model, with plenty of data points to get accurate transmission and mortality rates. Take the lowest bounds for the variables and the projection yields around 200k, take the highest bounds and the model projects around 1.5M deaths.

Fortunately, we are limiting interactions. The models show that the travel bans in China cut the transmission rate in half in that country, which will reduce the fatalities exponentially if we put into effect similar restrictions. Also slowing the spread gives our hospitals the chance to keep up with the spread which also will reduce the fatalities significantly.

A thousand by next week vs 2 or 3 thousand by summer is quite a spread.
Anything less than 5000 by May would indicate that the plan is working, or that it isn’t going to be as bad as projected.

Sadly, too many are politically slanted toward one side or another.
This IS more serious than the flu. I think what many people are saying is that flu deaths (especially the ones like SARS) also have a higher death rate, yet they caused no disruption to the economy or our daily lives. I think it’s difficult for many to believe that the fatality rate will be 3 to 10x higher.
Let’s hope not.
As far as economies go, I wonder what the world fatality rate is for workers (under age 65).

Italy had 368 die in one day. Nasa reported that the mass graves being dug in Iran can be seen from the space station.

How about in this country, as the virus spreads let's start with your family. See how hoaxy that feels. These are real American's suffering. 25% have to be hospitalized and the mortality rate is 10x that of the flu.

So yeah, this is something to worry about. Spain closed it's border with Portugal today, I suppose they felt that would hurt Trump in November.

Re: These idiots who keep repeating flu deaths, car deaths etc...

Mar 17, 2020, 11:47 AM

Exactly, Listened to a Dr. yesterday that works with the CDC on these issues. She stated that 80% of the people that get this virus will show no to little symptoms. Thus they will never be tested. If this is the case then the mortality rate drops by a significant amount. At my normal semi annual Dr.'s appointment she was saying that she's had multiple people come in with the symptoms of Fever, cough, and shortness of breath but because they cannot say they were around someone with the virus or that has traveled out of the country they were not to be tested. She stated that she treated them for the flu and all have since recovered. So what is the mortality rate. Probably way lower than anyone even thinks. Just like in China. The only ones that are being reported are the ones that have to be treated.

good example of how this hysteria is being fed:

every day you hear about more cases; 35 more cases in Georgia, 4 more cases in SC, etc. What you DO NOT hear is how many people are tested!

They are escalating the testing every day so more and more cases will be discovered and it will continue to grow. What we should hear is total number tested and how many test positive of that sampling.

In that light, things might not be so scary, but the press is not here to comfort anyone!

here is the data they won't talk about:

While the virus isn’t a hoax the response seems extreme, as if each new restriction is meant to outdo the last one. The response doesn’t seem proportionate to the outbreak. In 2009 the H1N1 virus killed 12,000 Americans and Obama and other leaders didn’t shut down the country.

The first cases appeared in the US in March and Obama didn’t declare an emergency until October. Worldwide the death total was estimated as high as 575,000.

The reason why so many people think it’s an overreaction is because we’ve never seen a response like this to something that occurs every few years.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

but there were 60 million confirmed cases ...

Mar 16, 2020, 9:05 PM

of H1N1.. with 12,000 deaths, that is a fatality rate of .0002. Although Sean Calamity and other republicans were on Fox hammering Obama about it, the fatality rate never rose to what we currently see in other parts of the world on corona. A rate of .0002 did not require much action by obama, imho, nor was it worthy of all the criticism he got from the repubs, but that is the nature of politics.

Re: but there were 60 million confirmed cases ...

A valid critcism of Obama/Biden was that they didn't shut down air travel from infected contries/regions soon enough nor declare a national emergency soon enough. Both of which Trump did quickly. (and was critized for the china travel ban when he did do it).

Re: but there were 60 million confirmed cases ...

Mar 16, 2020, 10:00 PM [ in reply to but there were 60 million confirmed cases ... ]

We won’t know what the death rate is until it’s all over. H1N1 was expected to be higher and the number of those contracted are only estimated because many never got very ill. Covid 19 is similar in that only the very ill have been tested so far so naturally the death rate will be higher because they haven’t tested anyone with mild symptoms. As they test more and the “estimates” come out in the following years the death rate will go down. Maybe still higher than H1N1, but lower than .02-.03.

In 10 years this country will be a 1 party system.
