"The Graveyard of Coaches"

Nov 18, 2020, 9:16 AM

These are the Coot coaches I personally remember whose careers were ended in Cootlumbia:

Marvin Bass, Paul Dietzel, Jim Carlen, Joe Morrison, Lou Holtz, Steve Spurrier, Will Muschamp ???

Any wonder why it's called "The Graveyard of Coaches"?

OK...in fairness...

God ended Morrison's career.

Morris was having chest pains and told Todd Ellis to throw him his nitro glycerin pills and Ellis was intercepted again!

Poor dietary practices and stress are what really did Morrison in .

Cigarettes, alcohol and a lousy diet but yeah, I get your point.

Screw Calford.

Maybe Muschamp will break the streak

The one and only coach to ever get a head coaching job after leaving the coots.

VMI where he went 17-62

But it was 15 years later

As far getting another head coaching job... you forgot about Richard Bell, Sparky Woods, and Brad Scott.

South Carolina has a history of being the last Head Coaching job…
I guess this is what they mean when they say, “Spurs Up!”:
1938-1955 Rex Enright 64-69-7 Last Game 21-14 Virginia (Until Spurrier, he had the most wins in school history. He also has the most losses at SCar)
1956-1960 Warren Giese 28-21-1 Last Game 26-0 Virginia
1961-1965 Marvin Bass 17-29-4 Last Game 17-16 Clemson 1965 (Last SCar coach to win his final game and last one to beat Clemson his final season)
1966-1974 Paul Dietzel 42-53-1 Last Game 21-39 Clemson (He won the ACC in 1969 - only other conference championship: 1933 - Southern)
1975-1981 Jim Carlen 45-36-1 Last Game 10-33 Hawaii (lost last 3 games of 1981 to Pacific, Clemson, and Hawaii)
1982-1982 Richard Bell 4-7 Last Game 6-24 Clemson
1983-1988 Joe Morrison 39-28-2 Last Game 10-34 Indiana (Died of heart attack 1989 after back to back 8-4 seasons in 1987/1988)
1989-1993 Sparky Woods 25-27-3 Last Game 13-16 Clemson (He was hired by VMI 15 years after his Scar tenure in 2008 – ONLY coach on this list to hold a head coaching position post-Scar)
1994-1998 Brad Scott 23-32-1 Last Game 19-28 Clemson (first bowl win in school history – 1994)
1999-2004 Lou Holtz 33-37 Last Game 7-29 Clemson (First season 0-11 and last game ended with a brawl)
2005-2015 Steve Spurrier 86-49 (Resigned in 2015 with a 2-4 record – the team finished 3-9)
2015-???? Will Muschamp 6-7 … They’ve already made the bed for you:

Years ago I thought The State had a great cartoon (probably Ariail) showing a South Carolina football coach interviewee and the AD walking past a graveyard that had those names on the tombstones, with the AD saying "Oh, never mind that!"

But I can't find it now. They've done a good job of memory holing that one.

I remember seeing that in the State no-news-paper when the Ole-Ball-Sac was hired.
My dad called it "The Coaches Graveyard" way back in the 60's.
Amazing how the more things change, the more they stay the same.
