The Clemson Effect

Dec 5, 2017, 9:03 PM

Clemson ain’t Bama. They ain’t Southern Cal. They ain’t FSU or Texas or Michigan or Ohio State. They are Clemson.

It just isn’t acceptable that CLEMSON won the national championship. It just isn't right that Clemson hasn't gone back to its place in the pecking order. It just isn’t right that CLEMSON has handed convincing wins to elite programs. It just isn’t tolerable that CLEMSON joins the ranks of the elite. No, instead, it is the birthright of all other programs to achieve the same thing. If CLEMSON can do it, so can they.

SINCE Clemson did it, so MUST they.

Step aside, Clemson. It's [FILL IN THE BLANK]'s turn.

Clemson’s ascension to the top turned the heat up to white hot for most everyone else. From the elite programs to the bottom-feeders, Clemson turned the college football status quo upside down. Clemson is clearly not a flash in the pan. They all know that. Clemson instead has an unexpected momentum. And the powers-that-be for programs country-wide are now on full throttle to do the same thing.

CLEMSON changed the paradigm. CLEMSON in many ways has evidently become an even bigger threat because CLEMSON isn’t a blue blood, according to the college football world. This isn’t supposed to happen. Programs have gone to their emergency planning systems.

The frenzy to catch that lightning in a bottle is going to have some serious impacts. It will impact the bag man. It will impact programs’ budgets. It will impact the coaching expectations, facilities races, and social media boon. As if they weren't already impacted enough.

We know Dabo said he wanted other programs to be like Clemson. Well, we know it’s happening, too. But not exactly as we expected. Instead, there is an arrogance, of sorts, that Clemson doesn’t deserve this special place at the table all by itself. The perception is that it is easier to make this happen than they ever dreamed. Dabo had proven as much, right?

However, in actuality, it is much harder to do. It's no secret that it takes special leadership, discipline, values, vision, intelligence, and belief. It takes talent. It takes commitment. It is comprehensive, serving the whole player, the whole program, the whole culture. It doesn’t compromise. It must be nurtured and protected.

There are many programs that will compromise to get a result that appears authentic. There are many programs that may have short-term success that deceptively appears real. No program is guaranteed to last forever.

Dabo is building something to last. He is still building. Hopefully, he will stay and keep building. Look around. There are many programs that think they should have what Clemson has. And they want it…Right Now. It will be interesting to see how they go about accomplishing that. Which ones will take short cuts? Which ones will compromise? And which ones will have patience and come up with their own version of the tried and true way to build it brick by brick?

to my ear. All of a sudden I hear Mac (from Mac's drive in) whispering to me.

"Mac!" I say..."Mac, is Clemson on the right track?

He says "If it's Clemson, it must be good".

"But Mac! Will all this success continue?"

"It's Clemson, we've paid our dues son, it will continue"

"But Mac, can I get a refill of my tea and a milkshake?"

"#@#$ YOU, YOU #$@# @#$#@ SON OF A @#$#@".

That's how I know it's Mac.

I ordered a chocolate milk shake the second time I went in there after my son moved to Clemson in June of 2002. What you posted was almost a direct quote--" #@#$ YOU, YOU #$@# @#$#@ SON OF A @#$#@"--from him then.
It would be kinda interesting to know when Mac gave you the earfull....

Great job. And in my opinion the reason for this programs accent and the reason for our continued longevity are two things. I believe you are correct that Dabo build the program the right way. I think the reason we continue to stay at the upper echelon is the fact that the program is genuine. What I mean is when players or parents come I think they see something different here than anywhere else. Sure they see nice buildings and equipment. But they see genuine affection among the players and coaches. Something that can't be bought or faked. You see it on the sidelines on Saturdays. Or when 42 is celebrating in the end zone after a touchdown. Or when a shaky kicker hits a 40+ yarder. They say a team takes on the personality of it's coaches. I am thinking it would be almost impossible to duplicate the real driving force behind our success.

Tigergirl, you have a gift for words that I envy. You are absolutely correct in your assessment. Dabo has created the perfect culture of winning the right way without taking shortcuts by cheating. As an IPTAY donor that hurts a bit, I take the most pride in the graduation rates of this program.

Tigergal, what a beautiful post; and what a gift for writing you have! You are right, Clemson's success has all programs thinking that they too can be elite in a very short time. But, the reality is that there are not that many Dabo Swinney's around. This man is special and experts around the country are beginning to understand and accept that fact.

From the class of 86, I too enjoy the way your writing makes me feel about our program, Dabo, the kids and the closeness to perfection it is run with a foundation on great values that continue to grow as Clemson grows and the best is yet to come!

Thank you????

How many of those "other" programs resort to dishonesty?

Dec 6, 2017, 5:39 AM

Something else to keep an eye on while all of this competition to be the best is going on. How many will get caught paying recruits in an effort to beat Clemson off of the mountain top? Even worse, how many of them won't get caught. How many of them will accuse Coach Swinney of dishonest business practices and make the biggest deal over the smallest issues, which demand the death penalty from the NCAA? Tis the world we now reside in. Everyone has super sensitive feelings, and an even more sense of self entitlement for no reason. Dabo is an old soul, and it's why he's done well at Clemson.

Dabo may have had some initial hiccups along the way, but I believe that he always had the blueprint for what he wanted his program, his process, to be. And, the main reason he has succeeded is also the reason it will be very hard to duplicate elsewhere. He embraces the CEO type coaching concept, whereas most head coaches want everything to be about them. He builds the man first, the football player next. He truly believes in the concept of team as Family. This gets everyone pulling together for each other, and for the common goals of success, on and off the field.

Enjoy what we have going here at Clemson. There truly is "Something in these hills" that the rest of college football is just now trying to figure out how to copy. Life on the field may not always be this good, but, unlike the copycats, we will still always be CLEMSON no matter what.
