TNET: Jaelyn Lay wants to use his size to be a mismatch for the defense in 2020

Jaelyn Lay wants to use his size to be a mismatch for the defense in 2020

Jaelyn Lay walked onto Clemson’s campus looking one of those players that head coach Dabo Swinney says looks great getting off the bus. Standing 6-foot-6 and weighing in at 270 pounds, there is no doubt that Lay is impressive in stature. Full Story »

Honestly, I was disappointed in Jaelyn last year. When he played, he looked slow, stiff, unsure. His blocking was weak. His footwork and technique were very immature.

I'm hoping he blossoms next year like Simmons did.

I wouldn’t be too disappointed. From what it sounds like, his HS just basically told him to go out on the field and they will throw it to him. No technique needed or taught. It’s not uncommon for physically gifted athletes to not understand how to use technique because they never needed it.

Agreed, but it remains to be seen if he can learn and utilize the necessary techniques.

Anyone can learn, not everyone will learn, not everyone will teach.

Both teacher and student need to be motivated and patient.

It makes me wonder why HS coaches never gave him the instruction that he needed to be a TE, and help prepare him for the next level. Maybe most HS coaches don't know themselves how to coach the TE position....

I can't help but think he has a higher potential as a left OT. His length and athletic ability should make him a natural, provided he has the right mindset.

Didn't Eric Mclain come in as a huge (size wise) TE prospect? He made a pretty good olineman.

Well isn't it easier to get to the NFL as an elite blocking TE that can catch the FB if needed, over getting drafted for a position as an offensive Lineman?

Just a question, but after reading an article where the kid says he has never blocked before enrolling at Clemson, why would you think offensive tackle would be a natural change and option for him?

Eric Mcclain came in as a blocking TE and was moved to tackle.

Also, our O-line recruiting is on a whole other level now compared to when we were switching TEs and DTs to offensive line.

I think Lay continuing to play TE gives us the best of both worlds if he improves his blocking because it allows us to be more diverse in our playcalling when he is on the field.

For all the praise Jordan Legette got while at Clemson, he was a liability as a blocker through most of his career.

We haven't had a guy that does both things well since Dwayne Allen.

I cant wait to see Lay come into his own. He will definitely be a problem passing and once his blocking cleans up, nasty. I'd love to see he ans Galloway on the field at the same time.

With ETN returning, I am hoping some 2 or 3 tight end sets are in the works!

Lay is a stud...

Jan 30, 2020, 10:10 AM

He will be a great one, mark my word!! He just needed a year to get stronger and wrap his mind around all the technicalities of the position, like 99% of TEs coming in from HS. He is very smart and driven and will be a great additional weapon in our high octane offense next year!!

I like Galloway and the other freshman Davis Allen. I'd like to see Lay drop a few pounds or bulk up to 300 and move to one of the tackle spots.

After a full season of the weight room and training table, Breese will most like drop the fat and bulk up to about 305-310!!!

Thank you Hopeful, but Skeeta deserves most of that credit bc, he stuck with it much longer than I did. Skeeta came into that process as soon as I started posting that site, and it was Skeeta carried it all the way to end with keeping that site posted on T-Net, and he never let up until the voting ad was taken down. And I do thank everybody that voted bc, I do believe that it helped us in getting Breese out of Georgia and away from UGA and becoming a Clemson Tiger!!!

We expect a lot of our tight end. If he played slow last year it was because he was having to think too much, which he said himself by saying he needs to learn the playbook in the off season so he can play naturally. He is hitting the weights too and I believe he will end up being a great one for us - hopefully he will be a match up nightmare for our opponents.

The kid is 6'6, 270lbs...and quick/fast for his size. Y'all need to relax about moving him to OT, he said himself he's not only had to learn the position but get stronger, etc. Can you imagine when he's stronger and knows the position and begins to come into his own what kind of a TE weapon he'll be. Galloway will be the likely starter, but could you imagine a two TE set with this kid coming in as the other one...who do you cover him with?! I think he's going to be an absolute Gronk-like beast when he comes into his own.

Re: TNET: Jaelyn Lay wants to use his size to be a mismatch for the defense in 2020

Jan 30, 2020, 9:10 PM

I don't know anyone whose said he's quick for his size. 270 is Waaay to heavy. He came in at about 230 and put on 40 lbs over the first summer. Thats not good weight. If he were to get down to 240 THEN he could develop as a TE...but 270 just isn't realistic.

Re: TNET: Jaelyn Lay wants to use his size to be a mismatch for the defense in 2020

Zion Williamson is 6'6" and 284 lbs. Why isn't it realistic? Lay was 245 when he got here and Dabo said he was built to be first off the bus. After working with Joey Batson, I think 270 is very realistic.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hope he turns into Gronk - we need a TE threat***

At 6'6", 270, I don't know why just having him run seven yards and turn around isn't a viable option. Seems like he would be a perfect check down option and would always be matched up against a much smaller player.
