Socialism and the University of South Carolina

Sep 10, 2018, 11:12 AM

I have been doing some research on socialism recently to try to understand why people are so enamored with that failed concept. It seems the slogan for socialism should be "It will work next time." Sounds a lot like the perennial South Carolina bumper sticker "Wait till next year." Don't know what that means just found it interesting.

Sep 10, 2018, 11:28 AM

Do you mean communism?

Sep 10, 2018, 11:41 AM

Communism absolutely failed, but I’m pretty sure the people of Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Germany, Japan, Australia, etc are ok with socialism.

I’m no propronet of socialism, but all of those countries listed above spend half of what he do on healthcare per person yet they live longer.

We have issues and the market is not “self correcting.” Cronie capitalism is real. And socialism is not an absolute evil.

And they pay for the ineptitude of their citizens through our defense spending. They offer nothing.

How bout this? We only pay for the disabled domestically. Everyone else needs to get a job. Just saying.

I’m a big fan of democratizing the workplace.

I lived in Australia a few years back and they are not socialist. They’re taxed heavier because of healthcare, but it’s definitely capitalism down there. I made a lot of money in Australia.

Socialism governments are great at spending other people's money. Including the United States of America's money. We "give them" our medicine, our medical break advances, pay for their defense, etc. If they had to go it alone, they would not live longer and their people would hate it.

I have been to many of those countries recently, and I can tell you first hand their living conditions are not that great and their people are not that happy. As the ole saying goes, the grass is always greener on the other side. NOT.

Looks like you failed econ

as those are all capitalist societies. You might consider these to be "nanny states", but economically they are definitely capitalist. Venezuela is the example you are looking for, but doesn't fit your agenda so it's probably why it wasn't mentioned.

Have you ever been to one of these other countries? I've been to Europe, and I would rather die young in AMERICA than live an extra 20 years in Europe. JMO, but I kissed the earth when I returned. I love it here. I just wish other people that seem to hate AMERICA so much would at least venture to those other countries for a while to see just how great it is here. And if they like it better there, then hopefully they will leave our country and be obnoxious to those countries. I'll help them pack if that's a problem.

I’ve been to Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Ireland, Netherlands, Germany, and Italy. I loved Germany, and hope to live there for at least year after I graduate. I may even do a year of studying abroad depending on how much I can save up over the next year. I could see myself living in Netherlands, Denmark, and Sweden too. I really loved Amsterdam, Copenhagen, and Stockholm. I didn’t care for Iceland, Ireland, Norway, or Italy. Beautiful countries, just wasn’t a big fan. I don’t think I could ever live in those countries.

Russia did go from the poorest country in Europe, prior to 1917, to the 2nd world power by 1975, while battling through a revolution, civil war, and two world wars that killed over 50 million citizens. China is a world power right now. I wouldn’t say that communism has been a complete failure. There are many things that we can learn from the collapse of the Soviet Union. We would obviously avoid the censorship that China puts on its people. We would avoid the psychotic dictatorship that North Koreans have to endure, because we have democratic institutions put in place.

I’m not convinced that it couldn’t work. Also, I’m not saying that it could work. I simply don’t know. I like hearing arguments on both sides though.

Re: Socialism and the University of South Carolina

I don’t know if anybody told you this, but capitalism existed before the United States. Many countries adopted capitalism, but rejected it after a few decades. Capitalism failed in its earliest forms while emerging from Feudalism, but people learned from their mistakes. Socialism/Communism is the same way. It is failing in its earliest forms, but that doesn’t mean countries can’t learn from their mistakes.

Let’s take the Soviet Union as an example. Prior to 1917, Russia was the poorest of the European countries. Most of their citizens lived in extreme poverty. They were mostly illiterate. Mostly agricultural. Then they have a revolution, followed by a Civil War, followed by WW1, and then WW2 after that. By 1975, Russia was the 2nd superpower in the world. Communism took them from the poorest European country to the 2nd world power in a matter of 50 years, while fighting through a civil war and two world wars. Now, they collapsed, and they did horrible things. There’s no denying that. But, if you look at the two countries over the last 300 years that have eliminated more poverty than everybody else: it’s Russia and China.

Capitalism has internal conflicts that are manifesting themselves today. And it’s happening everywhere. Here, Europe, and Japan. We are the capitalists, and all of us are experiencing massive problems. Our middle classes are continually getting poorer. Marx saw this coming. Now, we’ve put in safety measures to prevent the total collapse of the system. Remember what FDR did after the Great Depression. Europe is creating somewhat of a welfare state. Japan has social programs as well. But, capitalism is still eating itself alive. We just went through a global financial crisis 10 years ago. Another one is on its way, and most economists believe that it will be even worse.

Food for thought.

It works great if your country is already, on a per capita basis, wildly wealthy from selling oil. Then again, if you are rich most everything works great, doesn't it?
