So...Merl Code was also arrested...

Sep 26, 2017, 10:26 PM

as part of NCAA corruption scandal?

Code, a former Clemson player and current Adidas employee, is accused of working alongside Jim Gatto, the head of sports marketing at Adidas, to pay recruits to sign with Adidas-sponsored schools and then sign with Adidas once they turned professional.

Among allegations in court papers were claims that Gatto and others made and concealed bribe payments to high school athletes and their families at least three times this year in exchange for a commitment by the players to play basketball for two universities not identified in court papers.

Investigators said the deals caused universities to provide athletic scholarships to students who should have been ineligible because of the bribes.

In one instance, the complaint said, Gatto and others funneled $100,000 to the family of a high school basketball player to gain his commitment to play at a Division I school whose athletic programs are sponsored by Adidas and to sign with Adidas once he became a professional. It said they paid another high school athlete $150,000 for a similar commitment.

No students were identified in court papers by name.

Adidas said it was unaware of any misconduct by an employee and vowed to fully cooperate with authorities.

Code now faces a list of charges including several counts of wire fraud, conspiracy to commit bribery and solicitation of bribes.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

For clarification purposes....

there is absolutely no indication that this involves Clemson in any way whatsoever.

How does Addidas the company not get in trouble

These aren't rogue employees handing out free money. This is obviously being ordered from Addidas

Well...it may....

The NCAA, of course, doesn't have subpoena power, so they can only do so much. However, this involves the FBI with undercover agents, wiretaps, financial data analysts and the Department of Justice. So, this first wave of arrests is likely only the beginning as those involved start spilling their guts to save their own skin which could, in turn, extend out to other schools and, of course, other companies like Adidas. The allegations go well beyond an NCAA investigation where a school might have to vacate a few wins, endure some short-term probation, or lose a few scholarships. These are federal crimes for which people go to prison.

I would suspect they are doing the same thing here that Nike has done. Hoops and the hangers on are very sleezy

I'd be surprised if UNC isn't involved in some way. Sounds like heads are going to roll.
