Secretariat Still the Greatest.....

Jun 6, 2015, 5:20 PM

No matter what American Pharaoh may do today, IMO Secretariat is still the greatest thoroughbred horse ever.

I'll never forget being glued to the TV in 1973 when he won the Belmont Stakes by 30+ lengths.

Secretariat still holds the speed records for winning each of the Triple Crown races and they were 42 years ago now. He was unbelievable.

Secretariat Still the Greatest.....

Jun 6, 2015, 5:23 PM

However, Secretariat didn't have to deal with a bunch of fresh horses in every race. If American Pharaoh can pull this off against a bunch of fresh horses, his accomplishment would be just as impressive.

....Secretariat's Belmont time and owns the best time in all three Triple Crown race ?...fresh horses....lol...you could throw the freshest #### horse there ever was out there and it wouldn't matter....Pharaoh and Secretariat both ran on fast tracks at the Kentucky Derby.....Secretariat would have beaten him by twenty-something lengths....if Pharaoh wins today it has no bearing on who is the greatest horse of all-time......he'll be a Triple Crown winner and a nice horse..... .there are no "howevers" when it comes to Secretariat.

Triple Crown is still the Triple Crown

Jun 6, 2015, 6:39 PM

No doubt Secretariat was a stud, but why compare the two? They will never race against each other, so can we just say they are both great horses. It would be interesting to see what American Pharaoh would do with a legit horse to chase.

no the two will never race but you can't compare the two. Secretariat was simply faster as his times show. He was even a bigger horse. What AP did was impressive and it is hard to do and kudos but he wouldn't beat Secretariat.

I'm taking Frosted

Jun 6, 2015, 6:37 PM

Raced well in the Preakness, was unlucky in the Derby. If Frosted wins, then there is no excuses for AF, because Frosted will have raced in all 3 as well.

The last place horse in the Belmont yesterday finished 23 lengths back from AP. The second place horse in Secretariat's race was 31 lengths back. Did you hear that? THIRTY ONE!!!!Second place!!!!! That's like waiting 15 minutes for a second place finisher in a marathon. It's like finishing the Daytona 500 three laps ahead of second place.

Re: Secretariat Still the Greatest.....

Jun 7, 2015, 1:33 PM

Secretariat was truly special. It has been stated that his heart weighed an unbelievable 22-25 lbs. Average race horse is around 8-10. The horse that ran second to him in all three triple crown races was Sham and his heart was documented at 18lbs. Heart size is huge for race horses. Lots of money is spent tracking this gene so that there is a higher probability of a colt with this trait. The only horse with maybe a larger heart size was Man O War.

So before I buy my next racehorse, are you saying I need to weigh the heart?
