Oh my ! We continue to lose all the great ones. He could eat the edges off the plate. Very good control pitchers. One of my favorites too. A good friend of Bobby Richardson from Sumter who was teammates with him for years.

My dad went to see 2 games in New York in that series. He and the 2 friends of his that went were really good friends with Bobby Richardson.

He would sometimes fool left handed batters with his tantalizing curve and then bust a fastball right over either corner. A master at keeping hitters off balance. Few seem to be able to pitch this way today.

Like a whole lot of kids from way out in the boonies, the Yankees were my favorite team growing up.
From about 1960 forward, I was really dialed in to the Yankees. So of course Ford was my favorite pitcher.

I think that in 61,62 and 63 Ford was at his peak and won, I think, 66 games. He was tremendous. In those same years he made a total of less than $140,000. Even counting for inflation, Whitey was not paid well. I'm glad Curt Flood held out in the late 60s and broke the old "we own you" system which put most of the money made by baseball into the owners pockets. Yep, I liked it better when guys stayed with one team most of their career, but the on the field talent that made the sport so big needed to be paid more than they were paid in the way back.

RIP Mr.Ford. Lots of us just loved you.

One of my favorites too. I think he used to either own or was a partner in Boscobel Golf Club.

When I was a kid Whitey Ford had an ownership interest in Boscobel. One day he and Mickey Mantle came and played it. A small crowd gathered to see them.
