RIP Tom Dempsey

Apr 5, 2020, 4:33 AM

I always thought it was cool that he had that record of 63 yards for so long and that he had half a foot. He had the record for 43 years. Some tied it, but eventually Matt Prater kicked a 64 yarder in 2013. RIP

Had his card as a kid . Thought it was very cool that a " handicapped " person could not only make it into the NFL but could flourish and set records .
On to the golden goalposts ..

One of my sports heroes growing up. We all had the paperback Guiness Book with the picture of him kicking the record.

I've been fascinated by Dempsey's game-winning kick against the Lions for a very long time. Don't know why.

The Lions kicked off with only 11 seconds left. There was an 18-yard pass right before the FG that may not have been a completion but the ref said he got the second foot down. There was some controversy about it after the game.

In later interviews, players on the field said the sound of the ball coming off his foot was unlike anything they had ever heard.

Here is the original broadcast with Don Criqui. He almost laughed at the attempt. You can hear the special "boom" when Dempsey kicked the ball. There are other videos with better quality but this one captures the moment best:

Exactly!

If Roger Maris had to live with an asterisk, so should Matt Prater. ;)

I remember when they reported it during another broadcast. They speculated that it must have happened on a free kick after fair catching a punt and explain the rule. Later during the nightly news they showed the kick. Wow.

For a long time his 63 yard FG was the longest in NFL
