Quick travel updates / Hurricane Irma
Sep 7, 2017, 2:53 PM
|
|
Gov. McMaster will issue an evacuation order beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday
Roads in Myrtle Beach and Conway will also be reversed for several miles
McMaster will announce on Friday that it is likely that schools and government offices will be closed on Monday, Sept. 11 and Tuesday, Sept. 12 in some or all of the 46 counties in SC. (edited)
Since 1999, there has been no hurricane that has traveled through SC after first affecting Florida and Georgia, meaning there are people traveling to South Carolina to escape the storm. If you can leave now, go ahead.
Once you leave, you won't be able to return

Little premature if you ask me. The latest european model shows it not even hitting SC at all, rather going up through Florida. into georgia
We won't know anything until saturday at best

Hurricane Irma definitely will impact Saturday travel, especially on I-95N due to Georgia and Florida evacuations. Everyone from the Midlands south should on alert and prayer for those impacted would be a blessing. Emergency lane reversals on the major highways are expected.

Well it's going to be a mad house here. The hotels around the Mall and on 52 look almost full now. Florence generally gets hit pretty hard when these things come close .

Just a clarification.....I listened to the press conference that was just held by the Gov. IF he makes an evacuation order, that is IF - it will be in effect on Saturday at 10:00 AM. They will continue to evaluate data until such time that he makes or decides not to make that order.
It's pretty safe to say that if that order comes, there will be no game Saturday. IMHO

Re: you must not have really listened. He said the evacuation

Sorry, I didn't say that the Upstate would evacuate. I said, my opinion was that the result of an evacuation would force cancellation of the game, IF evacuation happens.
If the coast has a mandatory evacuation at 10 AM Saturday, the facts will be: 1) Double lane closures on main routes out of the east. 2) Massive exodus of cars. 3) Most State resources will be utilized to organize/assist people from eastern SC (and possibly central SC if included in evacuation) with many heading to the upstate, a major point emphasized in the conference. AND those in GA/FL traveling north. 4) Gas in short supply.
With a daughter at Clemson holding a ticket for Saturday's game, I'd sure love to see it happen, as would she.
We can hope and opinionate all we want. Not sure that it matters in the final analysis because if there is a mandatory evacuation and this beast is bearing down on SC, there will be other concerns than football.

Good thing the university is already making plans for that, per David Hood's update this morning.

extra tickets on the market if the mandatory evacuation goes into effect. I-26 will be reversed all the way to Columbia as well as the roads out of the Myrtle Beach area. Anybody going to the game from those areas will have to figure out a place to stay. Some will have hotel rooms for Saturday night, but not many have reserved rooms past that. Even if it looks like the storm won't hit the coast, getting back home will be a real pain until the lane reversal is removed.
