Question about the Ross injury

Jan 15, 2021, 11:19 AM

Does anyone know how similar his injury is to the one Mike Williams had? Are the injuries to different areas of the neck? If so, is one considered to be harder to recover from than the other? I realize even if they are similar injuries that not everyone recovers in the same way. Luckily Williams bounced back in a huge way, so hopefully Ross will be able to do so as well.

Mike Williams was injured on a freak play and fractured a bone in his neck due to a one time thing.

Justyn Ross got a minor injury and while being checked, it was discovered that he was born with something that has led to lots of minor issues and could have led to something much bigger with the wrong hit.

Based on the remaining questions in Ross' recovery, I am going to say that what was done to repair his injury was a lot more in-depth than what had to be done for Williams to recover.

Anyone with more medical knowledge please fill in the blanks for me.

I'm not a doctor but your reply to the post seems to be enough
because that is well put. Bottom line, Ross is All In and ready
to rock and roll.

I'm an orthopedic surgeon. I'm not going to pretend that I know every detail about their situation but my understanding:

Mike Williams - fractured C6 vertebrae and just took time for the bone to heal in a neck brace. No nerve issues and no surgery needed.

Justin Ross - congenital fusion of the cervical spine, started to affect the nerve roots exiting the neck and running down the arm (i.e. "stingers" he got in 2019). Required surgery to decompress the spine and likely stabilize with hardware. Bigger issue and longer recovery. The fact that he has been practicing is promising. He'll need the clearance to play full-contact but should play this year.

I know quite a bit about spinal injuries and have posted a detailed explanation about these guys in the past, but are you sure Mike Williams did not have surgery? Because I thought I saw a picture of him once in a halo, which normally you would only have after a spinal fusion. At least from my experience anyway that has been the case. But this has been a few years now and I don’t remember all the details.

Ross had a narrowing of the spinal column which got detected like you sad because of an injury.

People love to complain about how dangerous football is blah blah blah but so many of these kids have had serious congenital conditions detected early thanks to an injury.

Again I'm not saying I know everything about his particular injury and you could be right but I'm pretty sure Mike did not have surgery. He returned the next season really without question. I don't remember a long drawn out clearance process such as the Ross injury. Also halo immobilization is typically used for non-op treatment for neck injuries (mostly upper spine) and severe, likely career-ending neck injuries that need surgery so the premise that he had surgery based on that is a bit off base I think. But I'm no doctor
