Orange Bowl officiating

Jan 6, 2014, 12:10 PM

Anyone else, other than me, thnk the officiatng was blatently and obviously pro-Ohio State?

Clemson was called for fifeen (15) penaltis totaling 144 yards.

Ohio State was called for just six (6) penalties totalling 60 yards.

Of the fifteen penlties called against Clemson, five (5)were on third down and resulted in a first down and an extended drive for Ohio State.

Without the help form the officials, Ohio State converted just 2 of its 13 third down attempts.

Re: Orange Bowl officiating

Jan 6, 2014, 12:16 PM

Didn't realise that about the 3rd downs. What bothered me the most was the defensive delay of game calls - being outside the "box" - a rule which is very rarely enforced. I saw Urban Myer out of the box and on the field numerous times. What a load of horse carp!

They play was to the OSU side of the field.

When you attend a game in person, it is shocking how many times coaches get out there.

The game would have been a complete blowout by the Tigers and a total embarrassment to OSU had it not been for the help they got from the officiating. It was among the worst ever.

the sideline infractions are my wutdafacks. seriously, wut were they about?

i thought they reffed as if it wasn't two great teams playing, but two hated rivals with nothing to lose from a brawl.

they seemed to want to take control early for no apparent good reason.

Question, on the kickoff after Sammy's last touchdown

Jan 6, 2014, 12:22 PM

Did the ball land out of bounds and bounce in? It looked to me like it bounced about 2 yards short of the end line and then bounced forward. The OSU returner never touched it. We could have easily downed it in the end zone for a quick TD if that was the case.

Anyone else remember Georgia doing that in their national championship game against ND in 1980?

Re: Orange Bowl officiating

Jan 6, 2014, 12:32 PM

Can you believe the fifteen yard penalty for "sideline infraction" in a game like this?

The penalty on Shuey for planting Miller was RIDICULOUS! It was a CLEAN hit! Heck, football is a contact sport - not for sissies!

To reinforce you comment - OSU was given 5 (that's five} first downs by penalty. Clemson? NONE!

Also, I guess you heard our crack announcers say what a good job the officials were doing. INCREDIBLE!

I don't know what channels bowl teams have top go through to complain about such prejudiced officiating, but I hope our administration lets 'em hear it!

Without the penalties on Clemson, this game would not have even been close!

Oh yeah, it is OK to complain about officiating when you WIN!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree about that remark by the commentators

Jan 6, 2014, 12:48 PM

Watched the replay of the game as soon as I got back....I couldn't believe what I was hearing. It was obvious who they wanted to win

On VB's unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, we also got a delay of game/sideline interference penalty and they didn't claim either to be declined.

When you have both a live ball and dead ball foul.

Jan 6, 2014, 2:30 PM [ in reply to Also, since when do penalties stack? ]

The defensive delay of game penalty is a live ball foul. The unsportsmanlike conduct penalty was a dead ball foul. You can accept both penalties.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My only question is about the short on 4th down run

Jan 6, 2014, 12:51 PM

followed by a late hit. I honestly thought that would be first down Clemson.

Were they right in that case to have OSU 1st down but lose 15 yards?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It was effectively a dead ball foul....

Jan 6, 2014, 1:07 PM

After Hot Rod was run out of bounds on the failed 4th down attempt, the play was over.

I don't like the rule. IMO, it should be considered an extension of the 4th down play. However, in that case, it as the correct call.

From the replay, the correct call was actually targeting

Jan 6, 2014, 1:25 PM

while it was a late hit, it was done by lowering the head, leading with the crown of the helmet and initial contact is helmet to helmet with the ball carrier.

When they were reviewing the play, I actually thought they were determining whether to eject the player or not.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

they said once he was out of bounds short of the first down

Jan 6, 2014, 1:59 PM [ in reply to It was effectively a dead ball foul.... ]

that possession had changed and the penalty came after. that's fine and dandy but it seems like I've seen similar situations result in automatic first down

Oh yeah! I forgot to mention the goal line play where it was obvious - OBVIOUS from the replay that Tajh had scored, but the replay official would not overturn the call on the field!

Even our CRACK announcers said from the replay it was an obvious touchdown!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

At least they didn't listen to the crack annoucers that

Jan 6, 2014, 1:31 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

To me, the most telling thing was the distribution of the

flags. During the year, we seem to average 5 to 6 penalties a game. No way we go to 15. Something is just not correct. We did not appear to play any differently and it wasn't like we were calling offensive holding.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Season stats for Clemson (w/o OB)

Jan 6, 2014, 1:49 PM

Average: 4.8 penalties per game for 42 yards.
OB: 15 penalities for 144 yards.

Yep, those AAC officials were biased.
