NFL should be changing, NOT colleges paying students

Jun 16, 2020, 3:46 PM

I don’t understand why the media types keep insisting that colleges change and pay students salaries to play football, instead of saying that the NFL should change its rules so that teams can sign players whenever (like soccer). Colleges are first and foremost institutions of higher learning; it’s not the universities’ fault that alums and fans are so dedicated that they are willing to pay money to watch intercollegiate football. But the NFL gets a free development league and no one calling them out.

One possible explanation is that these media members have an agenda to reshape or end college football. Right now, programs like Coach Swinney’s develop young men in virtuous ways outside of the control of the media and the culture that it wants to promote. Also, liberal culture-makers are used to controlling the messaging at universities but college football mostly stands outside of that control. They know that they can’t control the NFL so they don’t target the most obvious way to solve this problem.

They aren't suggesting that the schools pay the athletes. They want the players to have rights to make money off of their own name.

NIL is a done deal and I don’t have a problem with it. In addition to NIL there are several media members who are saying colleges should pay players. This was at the root of the criticism of Dabo when he said (roughly) “If we start paying players I’ll go and do something else.” Dabo never had a problem with NIL, so what were they criticizing him for if not for his stance that colleges shouldn’t be playing players (which they disagree with)?

Athletes already have that right. But if the athlete exercise it, it jeopardizes their amateur status that is required by the NCAA. Professional athletes need not apply. If you play golf professionally, you cannot play in the US Amateur tournament or any of the other amateur-only tournaments held each year.

The reason the NFL won't take younger players right out of high school is because the NFL Player's Union doesn't want them to--it's part of their CBA. Same with the NBA, but their age limit is lower.

No one is forced to play college basketball or football. For basketball, you could reasonably go play professionally in Europe or Asia for a year instead of college and make as much as you can get. Football is a little harder, but there are many semi-pro teams you could work out with instead of playing college football and sign as many endorsement deals as you can find. No exposure on TV or anything though, so maybe playing college football "for free" is worth more than just the scholarships, stipends, food, training, coaching, etc. that is all given to the players.

Exactly and the NCAA requires an athlete agree to maintain that status in turn for the scholarship. They should tell players who want to have NIL or make money to go Sue the NFL for age discrimination.

null

You don't have status for age discrimination until after 40***
