Just watched ESPN hi-lites of Natty 1st time...

Jan 31, 2020, 11:33 PM

We lost & it wasn’t’ even close after the 25-28 score even though our Boys fought pretty good.

As mentioned, our soft schedule finally caught up with us.

The OHst game & win was a boxing match and facing another tough team in LSU in such a short time wasn’t good for us..while they had faced & beaten 7 other top 10 teams.

Life will go on and Clemson football & coaches will grow from this.

I disagree with your assessment Bill. While Clemson’s schedule may have been a contributing factor to the loss, it would be way down on the list. In my opinion, the top three contributing factors to Cemson’s loss are the following:

1. Joe burrow is arguably the best college quarterback to ever play the game. He had the ighest Heisman voting margin, highest number of touchdown passes in a season, I believe he had the highest percentage and highest QBR rating. We can debate if he’s the best ever, but I would argue there’s nobody who has ever been better.

2. Offensive Play calling was absolutely abysmal. ETN was getting nearly 6 yards a carry and after we brought the score to within three (25-28), I believe he carried the ball only one or two times there after. Absolutely pathetic play calling by Tony Elliot.

3. Trevor probably played the worst game since he was in Little League, maybe in his life. I believe he had 13 unforced throwing errors during the game. I doubt he’s ever had more than two or three prior to this game. That wasn’t a testament to LSU‘s defensive abilities, it’s just that for some reason Trevor was off that night and that really hurt. That compounded the offensive play calling issue since everybody could see Trevor was having problems yet Tony Elliot would not run the ball.

The poor officiating had a bigger affect a.k.a., the T Higgins touchdown that was called back. That was a dagger in the heart and had a bigger effect on the outcome then our schedule.

The home-field advantage for LSU what is a bigger contributing factor then Clemson‘s regular season schedule.

Sorry Bill, I respect your posts, but I think you’re off base on this one. there were many contributing factors to the loss, in any argument regarding Clemson’s schedule would be way down on the list. Plus we don’t need to feed the ”week ACC schedule” narrative to the trolls on this board.

I agree with SLTtiger59. The play calling was not adjusted in 2nd half. Going downfield on 3rd and medium(just because you have one on one coverage) was like trying to put a square peg in a round hole. It wasn't going to work with their great defensive backs. Just move the chains with Etienne and a shorter passing game. Sure, hindsight is 20/20 but those are the cold, hard facts and Elliot needs to learn from this and not make excuses-in other words: accept responsibility. You only get one chance in a Natty to get it right and we didn't.

A lot of overcrowded our receivers being held. I realive

We held them some too. I guess because the refs weren't going to call it

I don't necessarily agree with all of your points, but i have to agree that "soft" scheduling is way down the list. However, even this thought has one caveat. I think or WRs were a bit soft in both games. Perhaps they were used to dominating lesser DBs and they could not raise their game, get separation, or win 50/50 balls they way they did during the regular season.

This impacted our offense significantly (& contributed to a few of TL's overthrows)

I agree about play calling. I wonder if they were showing looks where tony thought certain things would work but then they'd switch out of it and stop us. The forgetting of Travis though was reaally bad. I still marvel he's coming back. When you're a game changer and your position coach forgets about you totally I still cant get my head around that

What hurt Clemson when it was 25-28 was Clemson coaches not giving the ball to ETN. The offense became to predictable and he (ETN) seemed to only be given the ball on obvious running downs/situations. The game would have been shortened and I’m sure LSU would have been given less positions. It’s all water under the bridge. You live and you learn.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Perhaps you are right

Feb 1, 2020, 8:18 AM

but I would like to know how many offensive plays we ran in the 3rd quarter after getting within 3. It seems like we had a number of three and outs. By the 4th Quarter, we were down by a bunch and going heavily to the passing game made some sense.

lawrence was having an off night

Feb 1, 2020, 1:41 PM [ in reply to Re: Just watched ESPN hi-lites of Natty 1st time... ]

so instead of giving it to the guy averaging over 5 yards a carry we decided to put the game in lawrence who was having a horrible game hand..vintage elliot

As a known coot, bill’s assessments are always off. Sometimes a little off. Sometimes way off. But always off.
And to think, the chicken shiiite has been trying to pass herself off as a Clemson man for years. Shameful

Well, you didn’t hear it from me, however, BiLl has been known to associate frequently with an 0-4io State bucknut. He even watched the Fiesta Bowl with said buck-I. I don’t know about you, but I can’t help but think his judgement has become somewhat impaired, as a result.

Well, it could also be the multiple gf’s he has, too. As for me, one lady is difficult enough. Two or three?! That would HAVE to affect a man’s sanity! ijs

If we had a tough schedule we probably wouldnt have even been in the game. We should be happy with how far we got with our DL situation last season.

Feb 1, 2020, 8:13 AM

Think it may have influenced the play calling somewhat in that plays that work beautifully against lesser competition don’t always fare so well against elite competition.... However - I think Trevor’s struggles were a much bigger factor ... jmho. -<img border=">

Know that FiRST TAKE with Stephen A Smith stated the weak schedule got us..

Feb 1, 2020, 10:27 AM

and I agree IT was one of many scenarios for our loss.

Others, as mentioned above, were:

TL16 was off his game.
ETN was not used in last 1 1/3 quarters.
Play calling was not sharp overall.
Our WR’ers were outplayed overall.
Our DB’s were really outplayed too often.

OH, and JoeB & his LSU Team were legit, played like Chinese Bandits and wanted that Natty Win & Trophy!

Congrats to them, move on & welcome 2020.

Clemson had a tough game vs OSU. LSU had a walkover.

Stop watching finebaun Bill. They’re infecting your brain

Feb 1, 2020, 10:45 AM

The schedule has never had an effect on us before.

We got out coached offensively and made loads of mistakes. Trevor didn’t have a good night. It’s Ok, we got beat. No need to rationalize things any more.

Re: Stop watching finebaun Bill. They’re infecting your brain

Feb 1, 2020, 11:26 AM

First, we had a soft schedule, so that supposedly hurt us. Then, we had a tougher semi against OSU, so that hurt us. Well gang, which is it? I think we got outplayed and out coached. Plain and simple.

LSU was better team that night ....

Feb 1, 2020, 11:38 AM

No excuse but here is where I believe the buck stops...

1. (Joe Burrow may be the best ever and him making unbelievable throws put pressure on TL to do the same ..

2. TL couldn’t handle the pressure and played poorly... and the play calling only
Made it worse

3. The skalski ejection was the straw that broke the defenses back ... lots of guys were banged up and then our eyes and ears (skalski) ejected was the nail in the coffin ...

We’ll be back like the Terminator ...

Re: LSU was better team that night ....

Feb 1, 2020, 1:54 PM

Joe burrow was the best college quarter back ever for A SEASON. No way you can call him the best ever when quarterbacks have started their entire College careers. Look at the 2018 season(his senior year) he was garbage. Same offensive coordinator minus joe Brady. It’s honestly mind blowing, the improvement made in a season. Trevor has already had a better career than Joe. Deshaun has a better career than Joe. It was one season. Albeit the best season ever by a college Quarterback. To call him the best college qb ever is a joke.

Re: Just watched ESPN hi-lites of Natty 1st time...

Feb 1, 2020, 4:10 PM

I know you probably got some thumbs down action, but we are all on the same team (mostly) here... I just want to say I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment.

Guys, we have a soft schedule. You’re lying to yourselves if you think it doesn’t play a factor. It screws us in 2 ways: 1) we have no reference level to how good we actually are and 2) we’re not battle tested. We’re going to need to start pursuing real opponents in the future unless the ACC stops sucking. I think people got a bit too complacent when we curb stomped Bama last year.

Yes, Burrow was incredible, but that just meant that they didn’t need to use Clyde Edwards Helaire, who they barely called on the entire game (not nearly as much as they usually do). A lesser QB would’ve still given us problems with the weapons they have on offense. You should’ve been at the game... LSU fans practically stopped cheering (except for when they scored) because they knew they had it in the bag, the fans in my section were almost bored. 6 top 10 teams before us... they weren’t caught off guard. We give LSU fans for not having “been there before” but after our ACC schedule and relatively recent success as a team, we’re the ones they should be saying it to.
