More About College Playoff Numbers

Dec 29, 2020, 12:50 PM

There has been much discussion re increasing the number of teams selected for the playoff to six, eight and even up to sixteen. There are 130 teams in D-1 and everyone is in the playoff because the playoff begins with the first game of the season. Since the current criteria for selection of the final four was established, the Committee seems to have done a good job. Those teams just outside the final four may feel they were a better choice but that will always be a bone of contention no matter how many teams are involved in the playoffs.

With a four team playoff and there being five D-1 conferences, there could possibly be a problem if the five conference champions had identical won/loss records but thus far, that has not been a problem. Perhaps, the biggest objection to a four team playoff is the inclusion of two teams from the same conference. What if a team with two or three losses defeats a team with no losses in the conference championship game? Which team is the better over all team. the conference champion or the one loss team?

No matter how many teams are selected for the playoffs, each plan will have problems. But regular season games are an indication of a team's true strength.

The CFP has been dominated by Bama and Clemson...

Dec 29, 2020, 12:55 PM

which is the biggest reason why for all the talk about expanding the field.

So rather than focusing on improving their teams, the solution is to increase the number of teams in the CFP.

Expand the field if you'd like but at the end of the day, Bama and Clemson are still going to be the teams to beat.

If there were no Clemson and it was just dominated by Bama

Dec 29, 2020, 1:05 PM

the media would be totally fine with that.

Trying to pack the playoff just like liberals

Want to pack the court. I do think 6-8 is the right number. All 5 Power 5 Conference champs plus 1-3 at large.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's probably where this thing is going to land...

in a few more years (the five P5 champions, at least one Go5 team, and two at-large spots).

Even then, most years the CFP will continue to be dominated by the same two or three teams.

Unfair advantage goes to the 3 at large if they get a week off while the conference championships are played.
So do away with the conference championship game. Have each team play 10 conference games ,on a yearly rotating basis. Each school can also schedule a FBS school( like the Citadel and a cross conference rival game like Clemson vs South Carolina.
The schools are seeded, weekly after Oct .1st by the CFP Committee, and at the end of the regular season the top 8 teams are picked then seeded 1-8.
You then use the have the higher seed host the first round, and the 4 winners play for the CFP Championship using the 4 Major on a rotating basis.

Funny you choose The Citadel as your example. Some major conference program loses to them on the regular, can't remember who that is right now though.

On topic, I like the conference championship games, and think they should stay. If that means only teams that played in one are eligible, I'd be fine with that. Honestly, I think the conference champs should be the only teams in the playoffs (even the MAC, Sun Belt, etc) anyway.

The solution is a 5+3, 8 team format

Dec 29, 2020, 1:42 PM

The best thing about this is it will represent the big and 3 more that make a good argument.

What you said is true------

"With a four team playoff and there being five D-1 conferences, there could possibly be a problem if the five conference champions had identical won/loss records but thus far, that has not been a problem. Perhaps, the biggest objection to a four team playoff is the inclusion of two teams from the same conference."

But the best way to have a true playoff and champion is let all conf champs in - hey let Cincy in - so what if they get Kilt by Bama - maybe they win the way Boise St beat Choklahoma that year.

a 5 + 3 format is coming I think - and especially after this year

The CFP has a 12-year contract...

Dec 29, 2020, 1:47 PM

that runs through the 2026 season, and while contracts can be renegotiated, I would not expect any serious discussions on expansion until the current contract expires.

I think it happens then if not sooner - so much yapping about it this year - you never know - All it means is MORE $$$$ and MORE TV revenue.

So what did Cincinnati or Coastal do to miss the playoffs? Cincinnati played 50% more games than Ohio State, and Coastal Played 83% more. Both went undefeated and won their conference and beat several teams that are currently ranked. And yet Cincinnati is ranked behind a team that loss 3 games, and Coastal is ranked behind a team who only played 7 games and has no wins against teams above .500. No matter what they did they weren't in contention.

And picking between conference champions with the same loss record happened in 2014 with Alabama, Oregon, TCU, and Ohio State all finishing with 1 loss. And again in 2018 with a 1 loss Oklahoma making it in over a 1 loss Ohio State.

When a group of people make subjective decisions about who to invite and play in a tournament it's called a invitational, not a playoff.

Who wants to watch Coastal or Cincy get slapped around by Bama or Clemson or Ohio St? They aren’t in the playoffs because they aren’t even close to a top 4 team. The job of the POC is to select the best 4 teams, which they’ve done pretty well pretty much every year.

Joe21® Well said! All the people for an expanded playoff are missing out on that little "nugget"!
Go 8 teams: Number 9 and 10 will feel slighted!
Go 16 teams: Number 17 & 18 will feel they were on a role late in the season and they should have gotten invited. You can't win that battle. I like the current system because most years it's only about 2 to 4 and yes sometimes 5 teams that are going to contend for the Championship!
It's better than the AP and the other polls deciding! And, it's better than the BCS by a decent margin though not huge!

+1 Joe21

Money will be the primary factor for an expansion, combined with the lack of interest in bowl games by not only fans, but players. I could foresee a 16 team playoff, that includes all conference champions and remaining highest ranking teams. The only thing that needs to be adjusted for this is that any teams in consideration that are not in their conference championship must also play a game that same weekend. Highest ranked team gets the home field.
