Keenan Stadium 2000 No.5 Ranked Tigers

Sep 26, 2019, 12:03 AM

marched into chapel hill, overrated at No.5, however took it to the heels in a 38-24 victory . Dantzler went down and the tigers were trailing 17-0. Willie Simmons comes in and throws 4 TD passes, and at that time I thought we had just found our future " all-time great" QB.

This was one of the many Clemson-UNC games I have been to in Chapel Hill and all I gotta say is Thank God for Rod Gardner that night. He and Will Simmons gave the Tiger Offense all the momentum and turned that game around in the 2nd half by themselves.

Was there myself . . .

Rod Gardner had a knack for "creating separation" just as the ball arrived . . .

He and Simmons put on a show . . . Was a great day to be in Chapel Hill!!!!!!!

Hers the baby blue write up of that game:

That performance stands out to me so much because

it was the height of Clemson football in my experience. I was too young to have any real memories of the Danny Ford years, and living in Columbia I became a Clemson fan in the early 90's. So being ranked so high in 2000 was like a dream. I was so scared that it was all going to go away, then, out of nowhere Willie Simmons marches us back. At the time, it felt like he saved a very important season.... but then Georgia Tech pulled my guts out the next week. I don't want to talk about that any more. That first part of the 2000 season was exhilarating. But the end of the season almost ruined it. If not for that miracle Gardner catch and rare (in those days) clutch field goal to beat Lou Holtz, then 2000 would have been a horrible season. In the end, it was ok.

Heels had no answer for Simmons to Rod Gardner.

Probably the second most pleasing road comeback victory I’ve ever witnessed first hand. Of course nothing will ever top SCAR in 1977!

Shotgun Willie! Talk about a flash in the pan.***
