I've never really understood why a Marine Drill Instructor

has to yell at recruits at Parris Island. Wouldn't it just be better if the DI just calmly and in a nice voice explains that going right during close order drill is the wrong direction when the rest of the platoon is turning left. Or that having a dirty rifle is OK because they are in a training situation and he isn't going to have to use it anyway. Or that unpolished brass is no big deal because you are in the last row and no one will see it when you march by. I'm just not getting this whole deal about yelling at people!

I agree, and parents shouldn't be allowed to yell at children either. Just let them do whatever, they will figure it out.

Yeah do not yell. Just hit the Mule between the eyes with a two by four to get its attention.

Exactly. These men and women are volunteers and should not be yelled at all the time. Drill Sergeants should be thanking them for wanting to be a Marine! In fact, during battle if a Marine doesn’t want to continue to fight, his sergeant should show compassion and say that every thing will be ok.

In battle, they should carry around mobile safe places. Like metal porta-John type deals where they can get in there and maybe talk to someone about their feelings.

I'll tell you from being in a similar situation, you never worry about the yellers. They are just barking dogs. The ones that you worry about are the ones that DON'T raise their voices, and almost whisper in your ear. THOSE are the ones to be scared of...

^ gets it. Always fear the whisperers. Literally the only time I ever felt a bit of fear at recruit training was when one did that. "It was at that point that Jarheadtiger knew he done messed up!"

You know what upsets me? Someone spitting in someone elses faces because of a hat they are wearing. Guess the kooks on the left don't mind that kind of thing happening since they never bring it up. Wonder why that is??

Exactly Tigerlinks - the D.I. just goes in an almost whisper - "you are going to get you and every Marine around you killed with your lack of attention to detail". "Are you ok with that recruit"?

Stupid post ! If You ever spent time in Nam You would know. The DI's try to condition You on the Horrors of Combat which is Hell on Earth. I would love to see You go Through basic training chump.

Yes sir Mr. Robbensdale ....... I'm checking my USMC OQR (I know you know what that is) just to make sure what day I left for Viet Nam. Oh, here it is ..... Christmas Day 1969. It says I arrived a few days later and served 6 months as a platoon leader with the 9th Combat Engineer Battalion, was in the Naval hospital in Guam for 6 weeks, and then returned to Viet Nam for 5 more months with the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion and the 3rd Battalion 1st Marines.
Is that the kind of combat you are referring to, or some other kind?
It also says I retired in April of 1989!

Thank you gentlemen!
I should not given such a sarcastic reply to Robbensdale. Boasting about one's service is not something that I should be proud of. I was proud that I had the opportunity to serve ...... just like my brother, father, and uncles.

You might have a point, if we didnt know now why Potter was yelled at. He deserved to be yelled at. It was more than a missed fg.

I just don’t get that mentality or think it’s necessary. Even if there was more to it. If he’s had ongoing issues he needs to just be benched.
And I’m not talking about just yelling something in correction and moving on. I’m talking about berating and embarrassing a player extensively.

I would agree, but not in this scenario. He wasn't aware and ready to go in and kick a fg. That's pretty egregious. If it were about missing a fg only, I would completely agree with you.

True. Even still, I'm sure NO ONE has ever broken a club or ranted on one of those little green field places where dudes wear ugly slacks!
