Orange britches. Gotta be honest, don’t like it

Dec 5, 2020, 4:47 PM

We often call out other programs for copying our thing. Whether it be auburn with all in or LSU with Death Valley.

The “britches” term for pants is Georgia’s thing. Let’s just be honest. I don’t particularly like arguing in favor of it. Nothing wrong with saying orange pants which was always the case before the push too call them britches in the last couple years

No, the “#######” term for Georgia is a thing.***

I didn’t even realize this was an issue. I though britches was a Southern thing, not really about a school or football.

To my knowledge though, Danny Ford called them orange britches in the 80s when we first wore them. This is not a “last couple of years” thing. They’ve always been orange britches.

I've never heard Dabo call them britches***

It is not a recent occurance. I remember posters coming out

Dec 5, 2020, 4:53 PM

after we wore them in the South Carolina game in 1980. Picture of a Clemson player, with the simple caption:

ORANGE BRITCHES!

It may have also had the score of the game on it, can't remember. But, the caption was hard to miss, it was in huge bold letters.

So, the term is at least 40 years old.

I always call that game the Willie Underwood Game. :)

I totally agree with you! They were called.....

Dec 5, 2020, 4:59 PM

pants when they were first worn in 1980 and ever since - don't know who started calling them britches but it needs to stop.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well, we did wear them the first time in 1980.

Dec 5, 2020, 5:06 PM

And if you ever want to belittle a UGA fan, just say "1980".

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Let’s just win the game regardless of what we call them

Britches, pants, leggings,or whatever, let’s hope the boys have the mindset to stomp the gobblers. We don’t need a nail biter. Business trip. Leave no doubt. GO TIGERS!

There was a men's clothing chain back in the 80's called "Britches".

Yes, it was a clothing store named "Britches of Georgetown" and based in Washington, DC's Georgetown area. There was also a division of the Joseph & Feiss Co. (manufacturer of "Cricketeer Clothing") called "Country Britches".

I was one of the owners of those businesses, so I'm very familiar with the term and use of the word "Britches".

time a specialist in men's trousers, let me get some of you up-to-date so you won't be spreading fake news on the site.... <img border=">

The term "Breeches" is the father of the synonymous term "Britches" and has been around since the year 1205, according to Wikipedia. Both terms are for "Trousers" or "Pants", although "Breeches" today are often thought of as "Chaps" or crotchless leggings as worn by horsemen.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breeches

The is even a term for leggings designed for the legs of horses.... called "Hopples".

So, don't kid yourself that "Britches" is a new word - it has been around a long, long time.

Quote from Jeff Davis 20 years ago about the 1980 USuC game.

“I think the South Carolina game was the defining moment of the season,” said Davis. “They had a great team with some super talent.

Some of their players had said they were going to run us back up the hill. Well, we broke out the orange britches for the first time and played an almost perfect game. There is no doubt in my mind that the game against South Carolina restored the faith in Clemson football and put us in great shape for 1981.”
