All this talk of cancelling events is crazy. Why not cancel all events during flu season and crawl in a hole and hibernate. The fact is that 80-85% have little or no symptoms at all and the TRUE death rate is 0.5-1%. We live in a society that goes bonkers about anything.

Flu has infected 34mil with a .1% death rate.
COV has infected 125,000 with a death rate of 1.4% . The death rate goes up to about 8% for age range 80+. That said, if you happen to fall in the more fatal groups based on age or respiratory ailments, then you should protect yourself. But the rest of population is really no more endangered than those with flu.
The H1N1 killed 12,400+ in the US and as high as 575,000 worldwide. Way more deadly and wasn't as specific to it's patients. But it wasn't an epidemic of national proportion because the media wasn't trying to effect an election year. Timing of the illness just plays into the medias need to keep stories and agenda's alive.
I agree cancelling events is just ridiculous. People just need to be smart and don't need people making decisions for them.

I want to preface by saying I am not trying to be a contrarian, but you are the first person I have seen post how the death rate changes at a certain age group.
This poses the question, how does the death rate change at certain age groups with the flu?
I know the flu is worse for elderly and infants, but nobody posts statistics about exactly how much worse.
Everybody wants to post numbers and statistics about the CIVID19 because it's new and scary.
I would love to see how the flu affects different age groups because it's obviously much more deadly at certain ages as well.

TigerO, that was a quick synopsis from the CDC that I found. They didn't give quick breakdown by age for the flu as I don't think it shows a giant differential based on age as does the CV. Obviously age, compromised lungs and persons proned to pneumonia are going to have higher rates in both viruses.
It also stated that no deaths have been reported 10 and under with CV where there are some reported with the Flu.

If you listen to most of the doctors on tv they have mentioned those statistics whether they are right or wrong will see as time goes by. I heard one doctor say you have a 1percemt chance of dying in your 50’s and it doubles every ten years which would calculate out to 8 percent in your 80’s.

1% death rate would be very high for a virus thats going

to eventually infect a very large portion of the country. I've heard estimates that 40% of Americans will eventually get COVID-19 (not exactly sure on the time frame, but i assume within the next year before a vaccine can potentially be produced). If the true death rate were 1% that would be 1.3 million dead in the US. Hopefully those numbers are both incorrect.
Events are being cancelled to slow the spread so that hospitals aren't overwhelmed by massive spikes of infected. You have to keep in mind that many serious COVID-19 cases require ventilators and we just don't have that many ventilators in hospitals nation wide. Italy has already faced this problem in areas where the outbreak is bad. They've had to let sick patients die simply because they didn't have the equipment available to care for them. Also, doctors and nurses start getting sick and you very quickly have overcrowded and understaffed hospitals. That's what we are hoping to avoid, and that's why encouraging the virus to spread quicker is just bad.

Count me in T a C.... I'm very concerned over it. I don't believe for one minute this is being overhyped because of an election year. Just my opinion but I'd rather see an overreaction than the other way around.
I hate it when someone comes in to work sick. Totally irresponsible and lack of concern for other people. I support all proactive measures. Kudos to Italy.

I support your prevention instead of reaction, but I'm unaware of what Italy has done to get a "kudos".
Based on what I have read, their delayed response and lack of prevention for protecting medical staff has boosted the speed of a national crisis.
What did I miss that they did well?

I think you have your terminology incorrect. Maybe 40% will be exposed but that doesn't mean infected by. Probably higher exposure rate to the many virus flu's but doesn't mean you get sick. Only 34mil world wide have got flu this season, if 40% had got infected you would be talking 3+billion. So I think you might have misunderstood?

See the problem is Judge, is that most people don't know how statistics work. They take a virus that has infected 34 million people and a virus that has infected 125,000 people and compare the death rate. That's not how statistics work, that is skewed data. You can compare the same age group and can compare them but it's all media telling the world we are doomed. Just like the Aid epidemic or the SARS epidemic or the Ebola crisis. Can the Coronavirus kill people? Sure, but will it be the most deadly virus that we know of? Probably not. Just wash your hands people.

The mortality rate for older age groups is high and for those 80+ is very high. For those individuals and those of us who care for parents/others in that age group, some increased level of concern/precaution is warranted. I agree that it is being hyped by the media, but dismissive attitudes like yours and others here show a lack of awareness that is both concerning and confusing. Current measures being taken are prudent and I think measures will get even more appropriately drastic very soon. Sorry if this inconveniences you since obviously your personal entertainment is more important than the general welfare of everyone else.

So of course they are going to hype this stuff up. Just like they would anything else. Just like they DO anything else. Have y'all been living in a bubble?
That being said, what the heck man. Take precaution and take care of your young and elderly. We all have family right? My God people.

I suggest all of you Knowitalls go to YouTube and look up Dr. John Campbell... He is a UK immunologist with 50 years studying and treating viral conditions... You will learn that people from infant until late teens either cannot get the Corona or get a mild case... Which is great..EXCEPT they are carriers...like tuberculosis... Try walking around with THAT and you will be LOCKED UP! Ignorance is bliss... There is a lot of bliss on this bored...

But the 'media' has made this a very wearisome topic. Coupled with politicians and others looking for face-time, it's simply overdone, in the scheme of things. Lots of hyperbole that becomes disinformation, clouding reality. The Washington state governor, for example, went off the rails yesterday...totally irresponsible comments. Totally.
The high-risk category is quite clear...the elderly/compromised health population. The other category is the health-care profession itself. Those two arenas need all of the cooperation and caution the balance of the population can afford them. Don't visit elder care facilities for a few weeks...and reschedule unnecessary doctor's appointments...keep the professionals' dockets clear so they can assist with the more critical efforts.
To other's point, don't make yourself a carrier, use an abundance of caution and, frankly, act as though you, yourself, are in one of the two aforementioned categories. A few weeks of prudent actions by all can put a fence around this thing. Wash...wash...wash...disinfect common areas ad nauseum.
If you know it's going to rain, you carry an umbrella/raincoat...if it's freezing, you dress accordingly. Approach this similarly, with pragmatism...not panic and over-reaction.

On one hand: CDC, contagious disease experts, disaster and emergency preparedness experts, lessons from prior highly contagious new diseases, a virus with a long incubation period and no vaccine and high transmission rates
On the other hand: oldschool57 and an administration that thrives on anti-intellectualism
I'm pretty sure I know which group to take more seriously.

data - not opinion - fyi
Mar 11, 2020, 3:36 PM
|
|
wish i could cut and paste the graph.
I am responsible for 20 factories in asia - most in china and a couple in Wuhan. I am not a dr - but do have to give an update to my Board Of Directors each week with data.
here is the current mortality rate by age group. the true estimate is that this is at least double the real rate because many people have it and do not yet know it.
age 10-39 = .2% 40-49 = .4% 50-59 = 1.3% 60-69 = 3.6% 70-79 = 8% 80+ =14.8%
china death numbers are a bit skewed due to health care and food - but very few people have died at any age below 50.
the average ago of mortality at time of this chart was 81.
virtually every person who has dies (NOT ALL) - have an underlying medical condition that contributed.
All of this says - that while it is a big concern - it is not something that should make us paranoid.
Simply be cautious.
If sick - stay home. wash hands - dont touch eyes, nose - mouth
if you have someone with underlying respiratory issue - keep them safe.
live your life. be happy.

So if you get sick, have to go on a ventilator for several days, build up scar tissue that will affect your breathing the rest of your life, recover, and get discharged... that’s a good thing?
Not to mention we don’t have enough resources for thousands of people to be infected simultaneously, even if the mortality rate is only 1%, you can still get r effed up and have lasting debilitating effects as a “survivor”.

Just because you get infected doesn't mean you have to go on ventilator or get pneumonia. You might not even realize you have, you might think you have a cold. Definitely doesn't mean permanent damage.

destroy confidence in the market and destroy the president. That is ALL this is about. All those people died in China because China (with their fantastic socialized medicine that some of you Bernie knuckleheads support) lets their elderly die.....and that is who has died from this virus. Elderly people with 50 comorbidities. The end.
All the "concern" is political. I promise you. It's sickening.

So all the other countries taking measures are doing so to hurt the president as well? Nobody should be concerned with spreading a disease since it only kills old people? I guess we should just say screw all the old people then? The elderly who have died in the US from this so far have been because China lets their elderly die?

Yeah, trying to prevent a further outbreak of a disease that’s killed over 3% of people confirmed to have it is something only ####### would do. If only we were all as tough as you are. Nevermind if similar and even more severe restrictions are taking place in several other countries.

Cure. They are using a cocktail of a couple of AIDS scripts for anti-viral and auto-immune therapy drugs. Supposedly treated 77 people and only one casualty but felt like patient was already compromised. Other patients recovered quickly.
My concern is you hear about these trials but the FDA takes years to adopt medical treatments that have proven benefits in foreign countries.

Some interesting takes in here, I hope a lot of you are correct. I wasn’t thinking much of it either until I listened to a JRE podcast with an infectious disease expert who opened my eyes a bit with some data he presented. Def has me more concerned. My father is struggling with health issues currently and if it touches him I am fearful he will not make it through.
His data suggests conservatively 500,000 plus thousand will die, over 50 million hospitalized. He stated that the USA will be hit hard due to our higher level of obesity per capita. He also thinks it will reramp hard in China once they loosen there forced measures. How Italy was literally having to decide who they were having to let die due to overloaded resources. How it could cripple medicine supply chain that we do not produce in US and that puts millions in a life threatening position.
Hopefully I got his numbers and points right but I suggest to take a listen as it’s interesting none the less even if you think it’s all hype.
