Justin Foster

Jan 19, 2021, 12:18 AM

Is he set to be back in action for next season?

If so, my GOODNESS we will be stacked

I wonder who our 2nd string DTs will be? Tre Williams and Capehardt(sp)?

I would imagine Page would get some PT also, he's a monster

and we have Ruke O. who was showing some promise. Darnell Jefferies and Etinosa Reuben might get passed up. Actually surprised Darnell hasn't transferred yet.

for some of these highly-touted recruits to begin showing something. Seems like for the last couple of seasons we get so many blue chip players and they just disappear. So much that we’re looking at Nolan Turner coming back as a major deal for our defense. No disrespect to him, great story and all... but shouldn’t there be a player ready to replace him, by now?!!?

Re: It would be nice...

Apparently people think it's because "he is a great story", but Nolan Turner is a returning ALL-AMERICAN at safety and that is why people are excited.

Being excited about Skalski returning (All-ACC) and being ready for somebody to replace Turner (All-American) is a completely mixed up view that many seem to share here on Tigernet.

While I can't speak for what flying tig but I understand what they're saying... I think. Imo, I read the post from a more general angle and question pertaining to player development at other positions as well, not just safety.

Obviously, NT is the best or he wouldn't be on the field. He does have an incredible story, similar to HR. But it does appear every recruiting cycle we have these "game changer" day 1 starter, can't miss recruits that you turn around and all of a sudden they're a junior and they get buried on the depth chart.

Does that make sense? Please correct me flying tig if I read your post wrong.

During recruiting we only hear about the best-case scenario for each player who signs.

A "day 1 impact" guy can run into playbook issues, assignment issues, focus issues, etc.

Also if you keep signing those guys every year as you mention, then eventually there is already one of those guys on the field and the freshman isn't required to make that quick of an impact.

If I'm looking for a young impact guy at safety to make a move, it would be at the other safety spot that doesn't have nearly the established presence or production returning.

I think Cornell Powell is an interesting player to look at in this discussion. Did he not make a bigger impact before his senior season due to focus? Motivation? Or simply being behind other guys on the depth chart and not getting the proper chance to show what he was capable of?

Part of me wonders if he wasn't properly motivated before due to perhaps a low morale as a result of being behind so many guys. However, it always seemed as if our coaches had nothing but great things to say about his ability and results on the practice field. Perhaps with him it was due to the low amount of snaps on the field due to his position on the depth chart. Perhaps he felt too much pressure to do too much whenever he was on the field due to knowing he wasn't going to get more than a few opportunities per game, and that led to mistakes? Then this season when he knew he was going to get as many snaps as he could handle the pressure was off and he was able to show his potential?

Regardless, I think Powell managed to show that a player becoming a junior or senior without having made a huge impact isn't always the result of a lack of ability or coaching development.

Re: It would be nice...

Jan 20, 2021, 9:39 AM

My answers to your first 3 questions are yes, yes, and yes.

I think all of those things played a part in Powell's delayed production.

There were several times early in his career when he would be praised for his practice and then when he got a ball thrown his way in the game and didn't make the play, it seemed like we didn't hear from him for a couple weeks after that.

I guess the combination of not continuing to earn the coach's and QB's trust when there are other options kept pushing him down the list.

I'm incredibly happy to see how he shined this season, and I hope it shows the future Tigers what can be done when you stick things through to the end.

I also hope it shows TNetters that a player not being an all-american in year one or two does not mean they "don't have what it takes".

Copy that. Thank you. Guess I'd never thought much about your answer above either concerning players may struggle to pick up the playbook and all. Obviously could be an all world recruit and athelete but for whatever reason just doesn't click. Also being an old cog, easy for me to forget these kids have "other" major things going on in their life. School, friends, girls.

Sets Dabo apart - recruit the person first.

All-American?

Jan 19, 2021, 2:19 PM [ in reply to Re: It would be nice... ]

Ok.

I stand by everything I said. Our roster is FULL of guys that had us jumping for joy a year or two ago when they signed, at MANY positions, and haven’t been heard from since. Meanwhile it looks like Zannders is going to be starting. Smh

Re: All-American?

Jan 20, 2021, 9:41 AM

Yes All-American as voted on by USA Today for the 2020 season.

It doesn't matter if our roster if full of guys at many positions.

It only matter if it's full of guys at the one position we are discussing.

Safety seems to be one of the last spots that we are trying to push for elite recruits.

I am hopeful that Mickens and Carter can be huge impacts guys back there, but at this point the experience is winning out over the talent.

More specifically, the DE position group****

I'm excited to see both of them Carlsbad. I think both will be solid 2's with one or the other listed as or with Ruke O.

I think Etinosa is still learning football and realized that from the go. Don't see him transfer but can definitely see him getting more and more snaps. Hopefully he'll be a surprise and jump into a 2 spot. DJ just doesn't have the size and got stuck in between- imho.

I'll listen to the x and o experts.

Whoever Turner isn't a good player doesn't know football. Hes by far our best saftey as far as consistancy and a very good tackler.Heard so much about Zander being a big Hitter, but I've seen very few big hits and wrong coverage and wrong angles.

While I appreciate all of your responses

Jan 19, 2021, 10:46 AM

The question has still not been answered.

Foster could be an X factor for our D line if healthy. Given XT's inconsitency, we could really use him.

Re: While I appreciate all of your responses

Jan 19, 2021, 10:55 AM

I appreciate your question. I've asked several times in the last month in different threads. Even tried to reference @dhood to notify him, but I did it wrong I guess.

I'd like to know how the kids doing, as well as XT merely from a caring health point of view. Is Foster, or has Foster been practicing with the team. Is he rehabbing at a pace that says yes, he'll be ready for full go in the spring etc.

You haven't gotten an answer because if anybody knows, they aren't telling at this point.

We will likely get updates on player health when spring practice starts and we find out who isn't on the field with the team.

Fair enough, does anyone recall his exact injury?

Jan 19, 2021, 11:40 AM

And if so, what the general timelines are for recovery for the average person?

Perhaps we can make some projections

Re: Fair enough, does anyone recall his exact injury?

He had covid-19 and he's asthmatic. I've prayed for the young fella ever since. Hopefully he's recovered and being held/isolated out of abundance of caution since (rare) but can be contracted again. Hth some.

To add to this, apparently he was able to be paired with a specialist in the middle to late portion of the season and has been seeing some improvements with his health since that time.
