After the first 3 games, I am curious to know:

Nov 15, 2019, 12:30 PM

1. How do you feel about our 2-1 start?
2. What are you pleased to have seen thus far?
3. What would you like to see us do better than we have these first few games?
4. Is there any particular player you are hoping to see become our go-to guy?
5. Do you feel that we are capable of having a good season this year?
6. What are your goals for our team in terms of ACC finish and postseason tournament?

Mine:

1. Disappointed in the loss to Virginia Tech. I think we are a better team, and will prove to finish ahead of them in the ACC standings.
2. Very pleased to see so many guys show they can shoot the ball well. I like Simms' leadership on the floor, even when he hasn't dominated the stat sheet. I am also pleasantly surprised by what I've seen out of our true freshman guards, Dawes and Hunter.
3. I would like to see us eliminate the cold spells like we had in the second half against Virginia Tech.
4. I still think Simms needs to be a consistent scoring threat. I expect Mack to have some big games. I also think we will see more good games from Dawes and Hunter.
5. Yes, I think we are capable of getting into the NCAAs if we shoot the ball as well as I know we're capable of. We will need that to counter our lack of size down low, especially against teams with a lot more size than we have.
6. My goal is to finish in the 7-9 range and be on the NCAA bubble, hopefully getting in. I think NIT is probably more likely at this point, but I remain optimistic. A lot of this will hinge on how healthy Trapp and Baehre are, and how much they can contribute.

The team will surely improve as the season goes on. Getting the injured guys back will help. Dawes is better than I thought he would be this early in the season. Newman has become a steady player and is still improving. I think the season will come down to how well Sims plays because I think that he will be asked to carry the team. Thus far, I’m a little disappointed with his numbers but he is a team leader. This team really needs to hold service in the home games. They just can’t afford to lose a lot of home games because the road games will be tough for this very young team. I sincerely hope the students will get behind this team 100%. That’s very important. Little John needs to be a tough place to visit. I’ll be content if the team can win 20 - 25 games in the regular season but that will not be easy. Tigers may be a year away from being as good as we want them to be.

no....Judge Keller® loves Clemson basketball and is asking some of our opinions.

When I heard Tommy called Nick, I knew/felt he was done at Clemson.

Has anyone confirmed that Judge is not CBB? Okay - we will assume he's not for the sake of argument.

I'll have to pass on any questions as it hard for me to watch teams that seem to be coached so poorly. It makes my ORANGE skin crawl when I see such a huge problem that nobody seems to want to fix.

CLEMSON plays Detroit Mercy (who?) on 11/17, so I'll try and watch that game. I'll update my opinion of our program if it changes.

I apologize to the masses, but having worked in business for so many years, it is just hard to accept repeated failures without addressing the issues. You'll just have to overlook my "Best is Standard" mantra. Oh wait...someone else uses that.

As I'm sure you know, he holds the Clemson record for ACC winning percentage, and later this season he will be our all-time winningest basketball coach.

Thanks for chiming in though.

Nov 15, 2019, 1:28 PM

Very misleading stat. His winning percentage is still sub .500 and he inherited a program that was on the rise.

Oliver Purnell inherited a mess and by his last 3-4 years or so we were having winning seasons in the ACC every year.

So we’ve actually declined under Brownell in regards to how we are doing in conference play.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It isn't misleading at all.

Nov 15, 2019, 1:45 PM

You just don't want to acknowledge anything he has accomplished.

Nov 15, 2019, 2:05 PM

and the subpar support Clemson historically provides basketball, it is an accomplishment.

I would certainly like for that conference record to be better, and I believe that it will be. But you have to start somewhere.

I think Brownell is a good coach. He could win with talent but that’s the problem, until this year he hasn’t been able to bring in any talent. I’m excited about the recruits we just signed. I think his seat should be lukewarm at worst. He’s got the facilities now it’s time to start seeing some consistency.

Nov 15, 2019, 1:29 PM [ in reply to Brad doesn't need advice from TigerNet. ]

Now Judge, I suggest you tread lightly using stats to win any arguments regarding CBB's ability to coach and win games. Having a Math degree from CLEMSON, I can take those sames stats and twist them so many ways that would make you dizzy. Maybe we need to ignore those stats and just focus on his ability to get CLEMSON to the NCAA's instead of gasping and hoping to make the NIT. And maybe expect to even make the second round of the NCAA's. Maybe that's a better plan.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm happy to discuss those things too.

Nov 15, 2019, 1:56 PM

In NCAA Tournament games at Clemson:

Brownell 3-2
Purnell 0-3
Shyatt 0-0
Barnes 2-3
Ellis 1-2*
Foster 3-1

*note: Ellis's 1990 NCAA Tournament appearance was vacated by the NCAA due to violations. If the 2-1 record that year were included, his NCAA Tournament record at Clemson would've been 3-3.

Brad needs to make the NCAA Tournament more. However, we should be encouraged by the fact that in 2018, we made the Sweet 16 and had one of our best seasons and teams in our history. Last year, we just missed out on the NCAAs in a year we all expected to make it again. That was disappointing, especially since we lost a handful of games that could've gone the other way. Those heartbreaking losses, as well as some significant injuries (especially Shelton Mitchell's knee which caused him to be less than full strength, as well as other injuries which kept both Reed and Thomas out of some games, made for a super frustrating season).

We will have to see how this year's team does. I still contend that we are capable of making the NCAAs. It will take a lot of things to go right, but it is doable. I am encouraged by our recruiting recently, including this year's class. Next year's will be even better.

Simms shot the three ball well in Italy I believe. But I agree, that isn’t what he needs to provide for this group. I expect we will see Newman taking the big shots as the season progresses.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree.

Nov 15, 2019, 1:42 PM [ in reply to I wish Simms wouldn't shoot so many 3's, especially at the ]

Simms can hit threes, but I would rather have other players such as Dawes, Hunter, Hemenway, Tyson, Trapp, Newman, etc. shooting them first.

Reminds me of Ibrahim Djambo from a few years back. Wish he would help the team under the basket more and play to his height.

I was disappointed in the loss to VTech. I haven't seen a game this year but feel we will be okay. I'm hoping for a 8-8 or 9-7 record in the ACC. Know I'm being optimistic but I hope for the best.

situations such as ending scoring droughts, end of half and end of game.

See some evidence of solid play ... limiting TOs, rebounding, defense and foul shooting, but not enough information.

As a basketball fan, I look for overall fundamental play and several players coming up as big time scorers at crunch times.

At the college level, need both to be a NCAA tournament team. Flashes of solid play are not enough to convince me. I’ll be optimistic and keep supporting Tiger MBB.

We will be better that this year, I really like this team and feel like they are one of the best teams we’ve had as far as depth and shooting abilities. This team know how to play together and win at the end of a game. We will be a sweet sixteen team this year. Just my opinion an I (me me me) am a y-ball veteran and former daily player with plenty of experience!! ????

Re: After the first 3 games, I am curious to know:

Nov 15, 2019, 3:00 PM

1. I feel similar to you, we really outplayed VT in the first half although the score was still close, but the scoring drought in the second half killed us. And missed free throws, I think we missed something like 5-6 in the last 10 minutes.

2. Pleased with how good Dawes looks for being a true freshman, he also has great size at the guard spot that I didn't realize. Same for Hunter. This team can shoot the three ball well across the board, which is good considering the way basketball is trending in recent years. Defense has also been improved, and I think our offensive ball movement is much better this year.

3. I'd like to see us get inside a bit more, we tend to fall in love with the 3-ball which is part of the reason for the VT scoring drought. And I don't mean get it to a big man since we are lean in that department, just run some more designed plays for a mid-range jumper or opportunity to pass down low. I think we will still be a live by the 3 die by the 3 sort of team though.

4. Tevin Mack will be a go to guy this year for the team IMO. Experienced, good scorer, no reason for him not to be. I think Simms will try to be a go to guy, but as much as I like Simms as a leader he is too hot and cold sometimes to be a crunch time scorer.

5. Very capable.

6. I'd like to see us finish top half of the ACC and fight for an NCAA bid. Time will tell, and particularly the next five games will really tell us where we are at going into ACC play.

I will say that some of the over reaction on here regarding the VT game was entertaining, surprising how many people will come out of the wood work over one game. It's not like we lost to Evansville or something...

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The VT loss was ugly

Nov 15, 2019, 7:01 PM

Colgate was a nice win. PC and the next 2 games will tell us nothing. Once we hit Vegas, then go to Minnesota and have the coots at home I think we'll know far more. I'm still glass half full overall as I know freshmen hit walls and we lack size, and that will hurt us against conference teams. As always though, hoping for the best and to be surprised

Re: After the first 3 games, I am curious to know:

1 - Tigers should be 3-0. didn't shoot well and didn't handle the end-game very well against VaTech (also got some unlucky bounces)

2 & 4 - the freshmen guards are good and are going to be very good.
- this team has multiple scorers - 4 guys averaging double figures so far
- comfortable with several different guys with the ball in any given situation - don't really see any one guy being the go-to

3 - wish Jemison and K. Moore could be more productive
- hope Hemenway can come back quickly and be a contributor... same for Trapp
- need to be a bit better at the FT line

5 - the Tigers could be close to .500 in the ACC if they can win the games they 'should' win and steal one or two more.

6 - i think making the NCAA would be a real stretch this year
