Is this a reasonable assertion or totally BS?

Dec 2, 2019, 5:50 PM

The rankings are still artificial like the old days of the coaches, UPI and AP poles. If Wake, BC, NCST, UNC, UVA, etc were in the top 5-10 at the beginning of the season, our wins would be "good wins", and everyone compared to the ACC. So much of it is based on where they start. No?

That is correct and also where the problem lies! No one ever had a fluid ranking from week 1 to 2 because of egos. No one wants to be wrong.

Somewhere in the middle. It's BS when a ACC team can be 7-2 and unranked while a 5-3 SEC team is #19 but it happens all the time. Outside Clemson the ACC doesn't have any good team but from our perspective teams 10-25 are not good team so there's no reason a few ACC shouldn't be sprinkled in.

If the P5 were limited to playing only other P5 this problem would go away as we would have a lot of context in conference vs conference arguments.

It's reasonable. Unless you are a SEC homer!

You are correct! The below term comes to mind.

"Self-fulfilled prophecy"!

Of course, you have quality wins and look better because you play unranked FBS or FCS teams for game 1 and 2 then get into conference where half your conference is ranked. No matter how good they are - you are getting quality wins and a perception of either beating a ranked team or playing tough with a ranked team or losing to a ranked team and you won't drop far. The early season rankings are for marketing purposes! It's to get people jacked up when the weather is nice and enthusiasm is high still at the beginning of the season! But, it creates a situation where teams can look far better than they really are! Or rather get credit where they don't deserve it.

Texas was a quality win at one point. Nebraska was a ABC prime time game at one point. Michigan ( sorry ) but they aren't even as good as their record. They have beaten the teams they clearly should and lost to anybody with a pulse. But, because they started out ranked so high, they don't drop much!

I am just happy Clemson has been able to navigate through it successfully!
