I think the author was unfairly disrespectful.

Clemson wasn’t some little-known “safety school” prior to Dabo. Sure, applications are up and the football team helps that, but applications started rising 10 years before Dabo became our head coach. Clemson was well respected academically long before our football team starting winning big.

"Everybody needs to know that Coach Brownell is arguably the best coach to come through Clemson." -PJ Hall

That’s the only part I disagreed with as well.

I’m guessing based on the article though the author is not from the Southeast and not approaching it as a kid from the Carolinas applying to college but more a kid from far away applying to mostly top 20 schools and the like. Some consider Duke and Northwestern safety schools for those mainly applying to Ivey league so it’s all in perspective. Clemson’s academic reputation was on the rise long before Swinney was named head coach though.

the late 70's and early 80's were filled with engineering students from New York, New Jersey, and other northeastern states. When I asked why they came to Clemson, they all had the same answer. They all wanted to be in the south, and they all wanted to be engineers. When asking their high school guidance counselors for schools in the the south with good engineering programs, Clemson was always in the top five. Those were Clemson, Auburn, Ga Tech, Va Tech, and N.C. State.

Our engineering programs have always been well respected, and they continue to grow.

add architecture and construction science to that ! Article is sort of condescending and ignorant, imho. But , as a wise man once said, there is no bad press !

I would never have called Clemson a safety school

Swinney’s vision has gone FAR beyond football. He is very protective of our 7 home games which mean SO much to economy of this town. And look at housing development like Patrick Square where prices are skyrocketing. Also Swinney treats his players with solid business principles - all 72 played yesterday!
