Interesting blurb about Clemson

Jul 8, 2018, 1:29 PM

was scrolling this article about poorest town per state. Shows that Bath is the South Carolina winner. But, the blurb about Clemson's population of students skew the data.

Obviously, Newspring honorariums weren't included

Careful about what we list about "Bath", SC, it is in the heart of Horse Creek Valley. They shoot straight and cut deep there.

It was interesting hearing about “The Valley” as a non-local

I lived in North Augusta for four years and heard all kinds of stories about folks from the Valley. I would say from working at a local hospital there is a very high drug abuse rate there.

Actually it is considered part of the CSRA. Central Savannah River Area.

Bath is on hwy 421, the worst of 3 highways that connect Augusta and Aiken. No one takes 421 to travel thru, so very little business is there.

Bath is pinched on either side by larger, more prosperous communities, all of whom get a small slice of SRS money from residents who commute there every day, but Barnwell and N Augusta get a far greater share because of nicer homes, neighborhoods and services offered.

Bath's best rescue would be to merge with a neighbouring community--HC Valley doesn't need a dozen municipalities--but no one wants to merge with Bath. And last i heard, Bath wanted to stay autonomous. Inertia. Why change, when things might actually improve, you know?

20,000 students making negative income will do that. Trouble is most of the wealthy in the area live just outside of city limits.

I think the zip code with University would only have dorm

Jul 9, 2018, 10:09 AM

occupants. The city's zip code is 29631. It would include apartments but also a lot of professors and other university employees.
