Interesting Stat (Redzone TD%)

Jan 2, 2020, 4:17 PM

Redzone stops have been a huge factor in all of Clemson's big games. Taking a look at the redzone for Clemson and LSU. One stat really jumps off the page Redzone TD% offense/defense in a road/neutral site.

LSU Redzone Offense (TD %)

All games 78%, looking at road/neutral site games number dips to 67%.

Clemson Redzone Offense (TD %)

All games 75%, looking at road/neutral site games number jumps to 80%.

LSU Redzone Defense (TD %)

All games 63%, looking at road/neutral site games that number jumps to 75%.

Clemson Redzone Defense (TD %)

All games 35%, looking at road/neutral site games that number is just 27%.

It's why a potent OSU offense who'd led the nation in TD RZ% was held to 1 TD 2 FGs inside our RZ .

Brent and the boys don't like people celebrating in our end zone , so they don't let 'em in .

I may be mistaken, but I don't think they scored a TD at all from the Red Zone. Seems like one was a long run by JK Dobbins and the other was the pass to Olave that Nolan Turner got beat on (and later avenged) that was from the 22 or 23.

You're right , the Olave TD was just outside the red zone .

Even better ;)

Those are incredible defensive stats. But LSU is one of the top in the nation in non redzone TDs. So we are pretty good at just dropping bombs into your endzone.

Against garbage defenses.

LSU is the most insecure fanbase in the country. I’ve never seen so many opposing fans seeking out approval.

"against garbage defenses" .. I cant subscribe to that

Jan 2, 2020, 7:11 PM

UGA and Bama, are likely better defenses than any we've faced save OSU. In all, I would be willing to bet LSU has played a better group of defenses than we have. Look, what they're doing on offense is amazing. I'm sure BV would agree, and it's going to take laser focus and full effort to slow them down. The saving grace for us is, we may be the best defense they'll play.

Venables will make LSU play in the red zone. Bama felt it starting in 2016 and OSU did the same. Great offenses are limited in tight quarters. Burrow will have to be accurate and quick to make decisions.

Now make sure you come back and visit that statement after the game on the 13th. Don’t just flame out and disappear for 10 more years again. Come back and comment after the game!!

Sorry LAHurricane08 but not as good as Clemson in Non RZ TDs.

The LSU offense has scored 87 TDs - 55 RZ and 32 Non RZ TDs.

The Clemson offense has scored 82 TDs - 49 RZ and 33 Non RZ TDs.

I know LSU scored 89 TDs but 2 were on Punt Returns but to educate you, the Clemson defense scored 2 as well. So if you count them as Non RZ TDs, Clemson still has the edge.

I guess Clemson can drop a few bombs into the endzone threw the air or by ground.

Yes, except you haven’t played the defending National Champions yet, you will learn to respect and fear the paw soon!

There's something in these hills.

Any reason why road/neutral is relevant here?

Jan 2, 2020, 5:55 PM

I get that we are playing this game at a "neutral site," but...

1) Its not exactly a neutral field, it's a quasi-home game for LSU

2) By not including home games you are eliminating half of your database. The sample size of a 14 game season is already small enough so eliminating half of those games really increases the likelihood of having more variance.

3) LSU certainly faced better offenses away from home with Texas, Bama, UGA (insert jokes here), and OU all being road/neutral and all of the cupcake games being at home so that's likely to skew the numbers.

I didn’t say it was a hard fact, major trend, or even statistically relevant. I simply said it is an interesting stat. You are correct it is a small sample. Generally it is these types of stats you look back and say we could have seen x or y happening because of it. Who knows the next game could be an outlier.

Confidence intervals and powered studies are high with this one. A statistician I feel.

Undisputed conference champ and greatest team ever so says the experts who had Nebraska in the top 15 with Texas.

Same schedule as the recent greatest offense ever! Bama was on pace to score just as many points against all those same teams this season until Tua got hurt. Their defense was also not "Alabama good".
