Now that UCF has an AD....

Feb 11, 2021, 8:22 AM

...here are the early names: Jeff Lebby, Rhett Lashlee, Gene Chizik, Gus Malzahn, Phil Longo.

Note: No mention of Tony Elliott.

Lebby is the favorite. Coached at UCF. Current OC at Ole Miss. Players, including Dillon Gabriel, QB, are openly lobbying for him. The biggest negative on him is his father-in-law is Art Briles. Guilt by association.

Fans are divided into two camps.

1. UCF is a stepping stone job. Bring in young, energetic, successful OC. Let him be successful and then leave in two or three years. (Scott Frost, Josh Huepel)

2. Bring in established, older coach who won't be looking for another job. Get somebody wh will stay here until he retires. (George O'Leary)

Lebby and Lashlee fit the mold of group 1. Chizik and Malzahn fit the mold of group 2.

Longo is a hybrid. Successful OC (UNC). Older guy, may not be looking to leave in a couple of years.

I thought people were required to mention Tony. Isnt it a law or something?

You'd think a team that just won a NC a few years ago would attract most any coach they want.

If UCF is seriously considering...

bringing-in an established older coach who won't be looking for another job, they sure don't need to even remotely consider Gene Chizik or Gus Malzahn. Both would bail on UCF faster than a uof6c third quarter mass exodus if given an opportunity to coach again at a solid P5 program.

That is what a lot of folks who want a young guy are saying. "If we hire a 55 year old guy he many promise he'll stay here for 15 years and retire, but he won't. The first SEC school that calls will having him bailing. Just hire a young guy. We know he'll leave."

UCF is a stepping stone type job. That's just reality for them.

It always has been and it always will be unless and until the school becomes a member of P5 conference.

Hire the young guy.....that’ll give you 3-5 years to make a list and search for the next one.

No mention of Elliott. No wonder. He will be making almost as much at Clemson as a coordinator than Heupel was making as UCF's head coach.

Just don’t see Malzahn as a fit here. He’s an Arkansas redneck with zero “face of the program” style who specializes in a high school type running game with gimmicks thrown in. You are talking about one of the largest public universities located in a semi international city. No go. And Chizik just plain sux as a head coach so he’s probably happy to keep doing TV.

Interesting. This is the first I've heard that Longo is in the running for the HC job. Selfishly, I'd hate to see that for Sam Howell's final season at UNC.

I think hiring the older coach may be the way to go for UCF as they seem to be losing their HC to a P5 program on a regular basis. The problem with Chiz is that he doesn't like to recruit. When he was our DC a few years ago, he came with the understanding that he would have ZERO involvement in recruiting.
