Gunsmoke

Dec 23, 2019, 3:04 PM

Anybody ever watch the TV series Gunsmoke? Somebody must, because it's still on TV and it's the best thing I can find to watch on a rainy vacation day.

If so, did you realize Marshall Matt Dillon (James Arness) was 6'-7". That's a full inch taller than TL16.

He and Peter Graves were brothers. Radio Matt was William Conrad. Had the voice but not the looks for Matt on tv

My father was a Captain in the same Division and perhaps the same Brigade as Arness, although I don’t know if they ever met. They both fought in North Africa, Sicily and at Anzio.

James Arness also played the creepy alien in "The Thing From Outer Space," an excellent early '50s Sci-Fi thriller.

John Wayne turned down the role of Marshall Matt Dillon, opting to continue his career on the big screen, but recommended his friend Arness, who he had worked with on the movie set.

Re: Gunsmoke

I think John Wayne was considered for the first Dirty Harry role, but then a much younger Clint Eastwood got it. Good thing, too. Clint did that role to perfection in 5 movies.

The reason Chester Goode walked with an exaggerated stiff legged limp and Festus walked bow-legged with jangling spurs was to detract from James Arness’s slight limp. He was wounded in the leg during WWII.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Gunsmoke

Dec 23, 2019, 3:46 PM

James Arness was seriously wounded in the leg at Anzio, Italy. He was the tallest man on their landing craft at 6-7, and they didn't know how deep the water was when landing. Since he was the tallest, he was the first one in the water. He was hospitalized for a long time recovering from his wound, and he began studying acting.

Gunsmoke was the best TV show ever. I don't waste my electricity on today's TV trash.

Arness was a hero in WWII

Dec 23, 2019, 3:38 PM

He killed a bunch of German soldiers in a bunker at Anzio and won a bronze star. He also received a Purple Heart. He was quoted as saying that because of his height he was sent off the landing craft first to test the depth of the water.

Of old shows I enjoyed watching that had a “short cast” and McHale’s Navy came to mind.

No tall guys in that bunch; Joe Flynn, Ernest Borgnine, and Tim Conway may have been diminutive in stature but they were giants in comedy!

Also have the gun James Aeneas used in Gunsmoke. I always laughed at the way it looked like they were trying to throw the bullet out the end of the barrel not realizing they all used single action shooters for realism. That’s in Buffalo Bill’s Museum of the West.
