I have one from 1966 given to me by a friend. I think it was for hell week for freshmen. Looks like they had to decorate them and wear for a whole semester or something for hazing.
Tradition way gone before I got there in ‘89.

Seniors were given those hats to wear during their Senior year. Notice that the men had hair and was dressed up in coat and tie. The "Rat" hats were not mandatory but some freshmen wore them nevertheless. The hill tickets were sold to high school students at a discounted price. It was a different time being at Clemson during the start of the Vietnam war era.

Uncle had season tickets back then. He would take us kids and we would line up at the gate at the west stands. Think we could get in for $2 for sec GG. I want one of those hats

In the early 60's, as a teenager, I think it cost me $.50 to get in the game.

Do you remember the several years during the seventies when many Clemson fans adopted the wearing of white
painter’s hats with an orange Tiger Paw on the top?

My Dad (Class of '57) still has two of them. He and Mom don't wear them, or go to Death Valley anymore, but I remember when these were popular. Also, we had the Country Gentleman walking the sidelines along with the Tiger.
