I say no sports, then no sports scholarships.

Aug 9, 2020, 7:41 PM

Whatever happened to actually earning something? I get up and go to work every day. Been thinking I can spend my money elsewhere anyway lately. If ACC follows PAC 10 and NBA trend of being wusses and complaining about life not being perfect, I am out. I can go fishing in the fall.

Re: I say no sports, then no sports scholarships.

Aug 9, 2020, 8:23 PM

No way the student athletes should be penalized for this. Totally out of their control. I’ve been getting up and going to work every day for over 35 years too and that is comparing apples to oranges when suggesting scholarships shouldn’t be honored. That is probably the worst suggestion (other than not playing) that I’ve heard yet.

Re: I say no sports, then no sports scholarships.

Aug 9, 2020, 8:42 PM

I would agree it’s not the students fault and it would be a very bitter pill to swallow. So the school (other students parents) should pick up the tab? I don’t agree with the current line of thinking that everyone gets a free handout. Maybe some take a year off. I paid my own way through Clemson with cash, not a loan, working in summer and working close to 40 hours the entire time. On two occasions I wrote a check for tuition and didn’t have money for books for another month. It’s just an opinion, “fair” is where you give a pig a blue ribbon. The whole sports scene is a major turnoff for me these days. Hey maybe it’s just me, everyone else can still donate to iptay and that’s fine. If Clemson heads the same direction as many other sports, it’s fine, just count on losing my financial support. Which isn’t a lot I will confess. Hoping for the best and think it will end up in good spot. I just think sports players and now college athletes are quick to take a position while expecting the other party to still guarantee their part. Why expect the institution to give them financial support if they aren’t doing their part? It’s not ideal for sure but life isn’t fair. Maybe they can all get a job and pay their own way. It’s not that hard to earn $25k over a years time.

You should have worked harder in high school and EARNED a scholarship.***

Aug 9, 2020, 10:31 PM [ in reply to Re: I say no sports, then no sports scholarships. ]

I understand your point, but in the "debate", I take the other side. Not only do I think they keep the scholarship, I think we should up our contributions. When I graduated, IPTAY was only $10 and tickets to individual games was $5.00 (I think); given, that was 50 years ago. We didn't have the best of teams in those days and several of us decided we would send IPTAY $10 every time we LOST a game. Something had to get better and it usually cost $$$. If we don't play the season, then we potentially reimburse all ticket sales and some will demand reimbursement for IPTAY since that governs where you sit. Our money for IPTAY and tickets is already sunk. When we paid, we didn't think we needed that money back (I know that some are in hard times now, but probably not those giving $500+ to IPTAY and buying 2 or more season tickets plus some away games).
So, I will not ask for reimbursement for my tickets, nor will I demand reimbursement for IPTAY. I'll probably also give a little more when one of those students calls asking me if I will support the Clemson Fund as last year.
I don't just do this for the scholarships. I do it for the love of Clemson University and the heritage of the school and athletics.
....that the Tigers roar may echo....

Snakes up - interesting perspective and I certainly respect it. My original post was probably based more on emotion and representative of larger issues at hand. One other thought is I don’t think the actual data from CDC warrants everyone losing their mind and closing everything. COVID 19 isn’t the plague from Middle Ages. The original reaction was the curve needs to be flattened in order not overwhelm the hospitals. Now the message is close everything and hide in your house. If the season is cancelled - Maybe the players should have a 7v7 league on their own and get with ESPN for the rights and pocket the money. That’s something I would be in favor of!!

Aug 9, 2020, 11:13 PM [ in reply to Re: I say no sports, then no sports scholarships. ]

Yes, the school should pick up the tab and honor the scholarship they signed to give the athletes. Tuition is literally just a fraction of a schools income. IPTAY, endowment, private donors (non-iptay), grants. This is just obtuse thinking and you just want to punish the athletes for a decision none of them wants

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I say no sports, then no sports scholarships.

Aug 9, 2020, 8:54 PM [ in reply to Re: I say no sports, then no sports scholarships. ]

They arent being penalized. Theyll get to go to school just the same as everyone else. Actually, a large number of them might not have gotten in without the fact they play football. So, maybe, they took someone elses spot. Is that fair? Could be a scientist or doctor got pushed out so that someone could play football. We could go on. They are getting an opportunity. Its time they picked up their big boy/ girl pants and get to work. We all glamorize and glorify these athletes for playing a game. I believe they are getting more than their fair share. Time for them to put up their end of the bargain

Aug 9, 2020, 8:57 PM

Agree 100%. Said much better than I could say it. I am in no way against the athletes, it’s just they shouldn’t be treated any differently than other students.

The average student couldn’t handle the same schedule/expectations these athletes have. These kids have the Clemson brand as strong as it’s ever been. They’ve already earned their scholarships.

Are going to be really sad when these big time d1 prospects start going to the xfl instead of college. Then d1 college football will be just as exciting as 3a high school football. Got 5’8 180 pound Timmy Scott playing strong side defensive end this year folks!

Clemson UNIVERSITY must be preserved. The university is more important than the football program.

For what? they never had a job to begin with. It’s an opportunity to earn something. If the opportunity goes away then how can anything be earned? I have had opportunity disappear like everyone. Lace up the boots and go to plan b like everyone else. Again I hope they play and I Wish the kids all the best. I just think overall people think scholarships are entitled instead of earned. Big difference. I just hope our Clemson boys don’t go the route the pac 10 players went.

It’s the AD and commissioners. If no sports are played then they shouldn’t get paid. The real reason they don’t wanna play is the stadiums won’t be full there for 3/4 of the stadiums will be empty. That means a loss in revenue in ticket sales, parking spots, concessions, etc. Really sad it’s about the $ and not safety.

Ridiculous! We’ve gone from an America, the land of the free and the brave that would go to war to defend our freedoms to 2020 where the government is mandating we crawl in a hole and hide.
There are certainly ways football (& other sports) could and should be played.
I hope this is merely a thought rather than a prediction that will materialize this week!

Nobody has the answer on what next year will bring, it could be a totally different virus that comes about, we just don't know. But I do agree with Trevor that playing would be safer than mingling around with the public as it would be playing organized FB with the safest practices possible with everything being done to keep those kids safe. And it would probably the best thing for those athletes that need their sort to help keep them grounded. That's just my opinion on having a FB season!!!

This is ridiculous! Despite releasing schedules, I don't think there was ever any intention to have football. There is an attempt to squash the economics of everything in the name of Covid. It is as much political as anything. Football may never come back if the liberal globalists have their way. This just cannot be allowed to stand. This will kill many colleges and wipe out an entire industry. At the end of the day this is just another economic collapse because of a virus no more deadly than the flu. College football as we know it is over.

I know this hurts bad. Really bad. The shock is disorienting but don't act surprised.

I remember when the county judge here announced the Houston Livestock and Rodeo was canceled. There was a lot of resentment and anger expressed at the time because that was the moment all of us in Houston understood things were much worse than we'd hoped.

This may not be the best analogy for a Clemson football forum to understand but it really does fit.

I knew in my heart the CFB cancellation was coming. My heart told me we would never make it to the first game. However, the two days of practice got my hopes up.

Sigh.

Don't blame liberals, "wusses", or people that have a different opinion than you. Eventually, we will all understand and accept this had to happen.

In the moment, it still hurts though. BAAAD!

The conferences are scared to get too far away from the politically correct mafia folks, the coronabros, and the majority of sports media who evidently want college sports cancelled.

Also, liberal academia isn’t too fond of big time college athletics. This may be a chance to kill it in the model we have known. Hello Saturday-Sunday NFL. AND they’ll never go back to Sunday only and will kill the college football contract money.

I’m not too hopeful at the moment. Hope I’m wrong.

Eh, it's not so much about mortality rates, at this point. With more time to see what the true effects are now, we're seeing that a. once you've had it, you are most certainly not immune to a second infection, and b. for those that were symptomatic, there can be long lasting after effects, even after a "full recovery" (XT is great example that hits home). I want football as much as anyone, but arguing that the mortality rate is extremely low (which it IS) is ignoring MOST of the picture.

Always a given that it would be delayed. Now everyone wear masks, wash hands frequently, and social distance within reason. It helps. How much? Who knows. We are at square 1 though because of the deniers. The shutdowns were a waste because people didn't do the little things. Will that work if we do? Maybe. At least try. I say we should just go full steam ahead and wing it with everything wide open, but we won't. So knowing that, everyone needs to do their part. We're just delaying things otherwise.

Outside of Ohio State ... the Big Ten is irrelevant.... one could possibly argue the same of the ACC outside of Clemson..

But Ohio State seems to actually want to have a season...

The PAC 12 is irrelevant in college football...

Why should the Big Ten and Pac 12 make this decision for everyone else? They shouldn’t !!!

SEC, ACC, Big 12, and Ohio State should have a season...spring football is a dumb idea for P5....

Of course - realistically this won’t happen ..They’ll likely follow the lead of the irrelevant .... oh well...

Well, still hoping for the best but this fall had s&#%% show written all over it since February so no one can be surprised if it happens. Let's don't overreact though - I can't imagine that Clemson would not honor scholarships as some here suggest and also "NO" its not "the flu" at all so lets get real here. We had this thing under control (partially) but moving in the right direction but people just wouldn't do the right thing wearing masks and distancing and ignorant politicians turned their heads purely for political gain, moron school officials like GA use students as experiments instead of simply thinking about how to handle class changes, so here we are - you got what you wanted and yes the players are the ones who will suffer because of this. All you need to do is look at the data - pretty much everyone else in the world figured it out but the US because we are too good to wear a mask and do the right thing.
I hope there is some sort of season and give full support to Dabo and the coaches for keeping a positive attitude - that is what they are supposed to do, its their job. However, he also stated all along that he had nothing to do with the decision - anyone who didn't do their part to prevent the spread can look in the mirror, sans mask, and be glad you contributed to the lack of football this year.

A Innovative and Radical Proposal for the 2020 Season is as follows:
Why not let ALL college teams that feel an urge to play submit their names to a College Football Playoff Committee for 2020. Then, seed the highest 128 teams or appropriate number for those that are applying to play. Then, start a playoff in mid September just like the NCAA Basketball Tournament each March. The initial round of games will be played at the stadium of the higher seed for each game (or lower seed IF the higher seed relinquishes the right to host). IF a team that is scheduled to play desires among themselves (the players, coaches, and University administrators) that they don't want to play, that team can forfeit the game (the same applies IF a team cannot meet the required number of players if subject to illness, etc) and be eliminated since the tournament is single. When the remaining number of teams reaches 16 teams, then prospective sites and sports networks can bid for the next round of games on the day following the previous weekend games. In that manner, football can have a playoff similar to the NCAA basketball tournament. EVERY team can then have an opportunity to compete for a REAL National Champion, and none can complain that they were left out of the opportunity to compete. Any suggestions can be voiced at this time!!
