As I understand it, the true origin had something to do with Big 12 schools calling Nebraska fans corn dogs because their mascot is a “Cornhusker.”
Apparently some Auburn fans heard this and posted an extended rant on a message board about how LSU fans are very sensitive about being told they smell like corn dogs. It went viral and fans from other schools also started saying LSU fans smelled like corn dogs.

Just a sign of respect...for the most part. We are a fan base that loves football. The same as Clemson. When we tailgate we like to invite opponents and show them hospitality. That’s all.

I’ve heard their tailgate food is good. It’s just the other days of the week where they pack in so many corn dogs that the corn dog stench literally sweats out of them.
And they think that smell somehow gives them respect. True fact.

It was originally an Iowa-Iowa State meme. Had nothing to do with LSU. Auburn people took the Iowa posts, substituted LSU for ISU in the run up to one of our games, and re-posted it all over their message boards.
As was said here, it is weird.
In fact, I'm not sure where you could even find corndogs sold in Louisiana.

I read a book, I think by Clay Travis, where the author went to a home SEC game for every chapter of the book. The book said LSU fans smell like corn dogs due to their appearance looking similar to folks who work at traveling carnivals. Since corn dogs are sold at the fair and carnys work there, they pick up the smell of corn dogs.
The book also railed on Florida fans for wearing jorts. Which is obviously a State of Florida thing and not a UF thing. Florida State fans also love to rock a jersey and jean shorts to the game
