How much better/developed is TL this year opposed to years before

Dec 11, 2020, 10:35 AM

Is it just a changing surrounding cast that “shows” or “hides” his progress? Just wondering what you guys think. He was really good his first year and is really good this year but is he that much better? I am not sure. I admit I am no QB expert.

The difference between his first year and this year is not what is visible.

In his first season, he was simply part of the machine. He had studs all around him on the field and almost all of them had experience (except Ross) and knew what they were doing. He also had a defense that allowed him to play with no pressure because even if he made a few mistakes it wasn't going to hurt the team.

Fast forward to this season and he is in charge of the machine. Even though ETN and Amari are seasoned veterans, TL is the one making everything go this year. He is no longer relying on a veteran line to make the protection calls and keep him upright. He also no longer completely relying on the sideline to help him with adjustments and get him out of bad plays. He has also taken ownership of everything that happens compared to when he was a freshman where he admittedly was just trying to do his part and let everybody around him do their part as well.

The biggest difference from last year to this year is that he had shown that he can still make plays that nobody else can make, but he isn't completely ignoring the rules for coverages and putting the team in bad spots with a lot of questionable throws and decisions.

Let's not forget that he is having a really good year this season with 4 new starters on the OL, the loss of his best target at WR, and the loss of both of the guys who were supposed to fill in for the loss if his best target.

Funny thing, he has gotten better and more consistent... while also missing some fairly big targets this year.

Year CMP ATT CMP% YDS AVG TD INT LNG RTG
2020 173 250 69.2 2,431 9.7 20 3 83 174.9
2019 268 407 65.8 3,665 9.0 36 8 87 166.7
2018 259 397 65.2 3,280 8.3 30 4 74 157.6

You can’t make that argument. This teams wideouts are young and while playing well it’s not the best he’s had as we’ve been on second string all year nearly. Yes I think the zip on the ball his motion his awareness his ability to miss the open guy to wait on the play to unfold more and hit the deep guy etc is far better now than freshmen year. It’s hard to grasp how good he is until you go watch another game then compare how balls almost look like they’re floating or staying in air forever compared to what we’re used to seeing.
