Thanks for sharing that. Banks was my track coach and a really great man.

Dad was a year behind him.

The Classes of 1939-1945 sacrificed so much for us. Banks and a lot of these Alumni got to come back after WWII. Many of them didn't.

Next time you are in Clemson, visit the Scroll of Honor and Memorial park and just see how many made the ultimate sacrifice. 489 have done so. I went by there Christmas Eve and looked at each name there. I left an hour later with a greater appreciation.

Coach McFadden

Jan 3, 2017, 2:20 PM

I was at Clemson during his last years as an assistant. When Coach Howard stepped down after the 1969 season, Hootie brought in a new staff with him. Coach McFadden was not included in that staff, but the administration kept him on as the intramural sports coordinator. Boy, did he jump in and do a bang-up job! There was an expansion in offerings and everything was much better organized.

I realized even then that it would have been easy for someone like him to just sit back after being passed over - maybe even be discouraged. He never showed it. He simply rolled up his sleeve and did his best for Clemson. I never heard a person say anything negative about Coach McFadden. A great man and a great Tiger.
