Free kick after safety

Didn't know that you could on-side kick a free kick? Seems like a rewarded opportunity for the team that just got sacked? Just a thought

40-50 yard gain?
They kicked from their own 20 and only chance to recover the ball is 10-12 yards beyond that.
Best case they gain 30 yards.

Can't advance it if they recover.

I know the definition of the word "free" is being played with in our country, but the changes have not reached athletic rules yet.
Free literally means you can do anything you want with it.

With recent statistics calculated, onside kicks have been recovered by the kicking team roughly 15% of the time. Then BC would have had to drive 70 yards for the game winning TD+XP.
I'm guessing driving 96 yards is easier than that.

Almost the same rules as any other free kick (like kickoffs after scoring) except that the kick is from the 20 instead of the 35, and that it may be punted or drop kicked.
Kick After Safety
ARTICLE 2. After a safety is scored, the ball belongs to the defending team at its own 20-yard line, and that team shall put the ball in play on or between the hash marks by a free kick that may be a punt, drop kick or place kick

This conversation reminds me of a high school game I saw years ago. I think this rule is in college ball also. At the end of either half, the receiving team can call a fair catch on a punt or kick-off and is allowed to attempt a free kick. I can’t remember if it was teed up or if a holder was allowed but the FG was good after time had expired.

There were only seconds left when fair catch was made. Time had expired before free kick.

When I was in high school, I had not been a huge football fan despite being in the band. But I came to appreciate the game, and one day in particular realized that I "got it".
Our HS team was playing in a monsoon, and neither team could get any offense going. Somehow our team had managed to get a TD but of course the PAT failed. Clinging to a 6-0 lead, late in the game and deep in our own end of the field I remember saying to my friends that we should take a safety on purpose rather than risk a yet another fumble (there had been several already on both sides) that could be a scoop-and-score. They thought I was crazy!
Sure the safety would give them 2 points, but it means that the kick could be booted from the 20 unimpeded, without having to long-snap the ball, without getting it blocked. Play defense for 2 minutes and win.
On the next play, we took a knee in the end-zone, gave them 2 points, kicked the ball down the field on the free-kick, then watched the other team not be able to move the ball hardly at all before the clock ran out.
We won 6-2.
Sometimes that safety kick CAN be advantageous.
