Possibly unpopular hot take:Bruce Springsteen sucks.

Dec 14, 2020, 12:28 PM

After watching approx 45 seconds of him on SNL this weekend, I have no idea how he got famous.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't much like the Boss either. Not sure of his appeal

Dec 14, 2020, 12:28 PM

outside of the New Jersey.

2024 purple level memberringofhonor-greenr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I wouldn't go as far as to say he sucks, but...

Dec 14, 2020, 12:30 PM

I wouldn't argue about it really. I've always found him to be comically overrated.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgbadge-ringofhonor-fordprefect.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

His singing is terrible.

Dec 14, 2020, 12:32 PM

I'm not even sure the guy from the Sopranos was even playing the guitar. He strummed a lot, but you couldn't hear it. Actually I'm not sure ANY of them were really playing an instrument.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: His singing is terrible.

Dec 14, 2020, 1:16 PM

I don't like him either but wifey loves him. Should I be concerted?

Re: Possibly unpopular hot take:Bruce Springsteen sucks.

Dec 14, 2020, 12:43 PM

Yeah he sucks. Kiss is more overrated, but both acts suck.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Followed closely by Elvis Costello.***

I would say followed MORE closely by Neil young or Bob Dylan

yeah yeah songwriting blah blah blah

Tone quality? Turrible.

Billie Eilish as well.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

She's like 15 or something though, right?

Dec 14, 2020, 12:55 PM

I figured emo teenagers made her famous.

Elvis Costello can actually sing AND he's married to Diane Krall.

So does Billy Joel and Jimi Hendrix***

He has some great tunes and was once great live.

Dec 14, 2020, 12:52 PM

But overall, I would agree. Overrated.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg2016_nascar_champ.gif flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Most singers from the '60's and '70's suck now

Dec 14, 2020, 12:52 PM

Bruce had some great music, but you probably had to be there. His first couple of lp's were great, he went commercial with Born to Run, but made up for it with The River imo.

Definitely a great concert band and without CC he is not the same.

Still, it is an acquired taste.

TL/DR I like Bruce but have not listened to his stuff in years.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-fatherg-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Just seems like a lot of screaming.

Dec 14, 2020, 12:54 PM

Like later, when josephg® says how much Axle Rose sucks as a singer, I can actually agree with that. His tone quality is terrible, and he just screams a lot.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

His music was the thing

Dec 14, 2020, 1:00 PM

not his singing, imo. His band had a great sound.

record. Along with Dire Straits. But yeah, I see how he got famous. And like many people who get famous, I can see how they become unfamous. U2 is another steaming example. Garth Brooks. The list is endless.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-tiggity-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I loved U2 when I first heard them in the mid-80s

Dec 14, 2020, 1:27 PM

haven't listened to them in maybe 20 years

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Don't do it

Dec 14, 2020, 1:32 PM

you will wonder why you liked them.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-fatherg-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not sure how many artists stay relevent for long.

Dec 14, 2020, 1:33 PM [ in reply to Born in the USA (during the Reagan years) was my first ]

Most artists best work is their first album, or first few albums. To have your first 4-5 albums be considered worth a #### is a long career and a lifetime of relevence. Artists that carry on past that put out a diminished product and are largely proped up by their earlier work.

I'm sure there are exceptions, but I can't think of any.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Fans demand they get more of the same

Dec 14, 2020, 1:37 PM

Bowie did a great job of changing his style constantly, but there are not many who can.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-fatherg-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, but not sure how relevent Bowie was outside of his

established fanbase over his last couple of decades.

Ironically I heard a fantastic interview with the sax player on his last album on the U2 XM channel a couple Sundays ago.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

A lot of Bowie's best work has probably not even been heard

Dec 14, 2020, 2:27 PM

by many of his earlier fans.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

99.99% sell out, then die out.

Dec 14, 2020, 1:53 PM [ in reply to Not sure how many artists stay relevent for long. ]

The trick is to age gracefully. That's more of an art than the music really. The band/musician who is just happy doing their thing usually survive the longest. Most get famous, rich, change their music, then die out. Rolling Stones and Grateful Dead come to mind as bands that had true staying power. Jimmy Buffett is another example. Madonna is another.

Your best bet is to be content sticking to your roots, not chasing the fame and dollars, and touring forever. Those things keep bands/musicians relevant.

Re: 99.99% sell out, then die out.

Dec 14, 2020, 1:55 PM

Ray Charles aged well.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Jimmy Buffett is a brazillionaire.

Dec 14, 2020, 2:22 PM [ in reply to 99.99% sell out, then die out. ]

He'd put his name on anything, if there was a penny in it. Flip Flops, coolers, blenders, 4000 different kinds of koozies, hats, shorts, fishing rods, lures, casinos, hotel rooms...you name it, he sold out to it.

Good for him.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not sure that they sell out as much as they mature

Dec 14, 2020, 2:26 PM [ in reply to 99.99% sell out, then die out. ]

and lose an edge. You're just going to work harder when you're fighting for an audience versus having made it.

Re: Possibly unpopular hot take:Bruce Springsteen sucks.

Dec 14, 2020, 1:45 PM

Seems like everything I used to like seems overrated now. How about the Beastie Boys or the Chili Peppers?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I've never been a Chilli Peppers fan.

Dec 14, 2020, 2:23 PM

Most of the Beasties are still alive, but they are still good, I think.

Chili peppers were OK I like a few of their songs but a lot of the time they be so high you could not understand what they were saying.

Carlos Santana too.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He had a revival of sorts 10 (or more?) years ago.

I mean, they have Silvio from The Sopranos in the band.
