Every time I hear ESPN push LSU's Death Valley, it really

Oct 12, 2019, 9:10 AM

irritates me. Yes, our stadium is also called Death Valley, and everyone should know by now we were decades ahead of LSU's "Deaf Valley" nickname morphing into "Death Valley".

That said, LSU's biggest claim to fame is that years ago a nearby geologist noticed a seismic reading during an LSU football game. Well, that sounds impressive, but I've met that geologist as his wife and my wife are friends. The family has lived in S.C. for years. The geologist is a scientist and not much of a football fan. My wife, a former Auburn Volleyball player and a big college football fan was talking to his wife about college football and his wife mentioned that her husband was interviewed for a documentary about LSU football. They asked her husband about the seismic activity he read during that LSU game. Her husband told the reporters that a similar reading would be found at any college football stadium with a 70,000 plus crowd making a lot of noise. Of course, that comment didn't make the documentary, but why let facts get in the way of a good story.

So, it really is nothing special that LSU's stadium had the seismic reading during that game. You would have one at dozens of stadiums around the country every Saturday in the fall.

It's time ESecPN and the rest of the nation understands Clemson's stadium was 1st called Death Valley in 1949. Then Coach Howard embraced it. LSU stadium was called Deaf Valley (yes true) and changed to Death Valley in 1959.

With a 10 year head start in Clemson, LSU stadium is NOT Death Valley.
