Do we celebrate Purple Britches games? Maybe we should...

Nov 1, 2019, 12:35 AM

In case you were wondering, Dabo has actually fared significantly better in the Purple Britches than the famed Orange ones.

9-2 in Purple Britches, broken down as
6-1 in Purple Britches with Purples Jerseys
2-1 in Purple Britches with White Jerseys
1-0 in Purple Britches with Orange Jerseys

Specific to Military Appreciation games, he is 10-0 including 6-0 in the purple pants.

Dabo is 32-15 in Orange Britches; Ironically, only he & Tommy Bowden have a lower winning % in Orange Britches than their overall winning %. Even Tommy West was better in them.

There is one big asterisk, however. The Tigers are 20-4 in Orange Britches and 6-0 in Purple Britches since Dabo abandoned the Tommy Bowden more-is-better uniform philosophy following the Orange Bowl debacle against West Virginia. He decided only special games called for special pants, and the Tigers would have to earn them back. They went nearly 2 full years wearing only the traditional orange-white at home and white-white on the road until Military Appreciation in 2013 and then the Orange Bowl, on that same field, against Ohio St.

Austin Pendergist had an interesting Twitter series on the Orange Britches over the years a couple of weeks ago.

We do celebrate purple britches games, but we do so for a much more important reason than a football championship.

We celebrate purple britches (and jerseys) for the reason that Dabo has chosen to bring them out.

We should always maintain the tradition of honoring our current military and our veterans in as many ways as possible.
