Details coming out about Proud Boys' Capitol role

Mar 3, 2021, 9:34 AM

Along with the Oathkeepers, the details emerging about the Proud Boys' role the in Capitol attack and how they are likely going to be charged are starting to be emerge, and they are this: they knew well in advance of the fact that stuff was going down, they had no intention of listening to Trump's speech, they had disguised themselves so as not be easily identified by authorities, and they had positioned themselves around the weakest entrances beforehand to be able to more readily force entry.

In other words, for the Proud Boys, it was exactly what it looked like: a coup attempt, a direct attack on Democracy itself in America, planned with malice and forethought. And however much he may throw out his usual thin tinny tone-deaf denials, Trump of course knew perfectly well it was going down too - he intended it to, wanted it to, was hoping it'd give him the excuse he needed to declare a state of emergency. He'd had January 6th circled about a gazillion different times for weeks.

But rote denials aside, I know perfectly well what it was...and I'm not going to just let it go or forget it. Ever. Many others here also know perfectly well what the Capitol attack actually was, however much the Trumpistas may protest otherwise. And they too are not going to just explain it away or forget it, either, or let bygones be bygones. Ever.

And I suspect that's the thing the GOP truly does not understand right now about about what is holding the Biden coalition - I wouldn't necessarily even call them "Democrats" - together, that is exactly the same thing that held the Allies together in WW2: lifeboat politics, the collective awareness that there is indeed a very dangerous and very hungry shark in the water. And in the words of Bill Maher, we're all well aware...we're going to need a bigger boat.

We see the fin out there just fine, thank you.

So, does the claim that these Proud Boys were positioned

Mar 3, 2021, 1:56 PM

to attack the Capitol and "never intended to hear then-President Donald Trump’s speech to supporters that day" undermine the argument that his rhetoric in the speech led to an attack on the Capitol? I think there was much concern about his use of the phrase "fight like hell" during the speech?

And referencing the idea that Trump's "had January 6th circled about a gazillion different times for weeks", in the linked article, that circling seems to be a reference to his promoting the protest with these tweets:

Dec. 27: “See you in Washington, DC, on January 6th. Don’t miss it. Information to follow.”
Dec. 30: “JANUARY SIXTH, SEE YOU IN DC!”
Jan. 1: “The BIG Protest Rally in Washington, D.C. will take place at 11:00 A.M. on January 6th. Locational details to follow. StopTheSteal!”
That same day, a supporter misspelled the word “cavalry” in tweeting that “The calvary is coming, Mr. President!”
Mr. Trump responded: “A great honor!”

Just to be clear for the future, will three tweets to promote a rally/protest be the threshold for inciting violence, if violence happens...even if those who did the violence weren't at the event? I want to make sure we maintain consistency.

The speech was almost incidental, Swarley.

He invited a bunch of very angry people to the Capitol, told them the election had been stolen, and told them to go do something about it.

What did he reasonably think was going to happen?

I would also like to know what the FBI knew and when they knew it. Trump requested additional national guard troops for that day if it was denied.

Trump did not make any official request, and

Mar 3, 2021, 9:18 PM

thus he was also not denied. People definitely dropped the ball on how many troops they needed to stop the mob, but Trump did not make any request. That’s fake news.

considering their leader was acting as an informant, I am going to assume they knew a lot. Much like 9/11, they sent out numerous warnings that went ignored.

It's amazing that people believe this propaganda.

Mar 3, 2021, 4:33 PM

But I guess it's normal for socialists to make their enemies out as subhuman and lie endlessly about them. I mean just look at what the National Socialist Party did.

And it seems to be normal for liars to portray their enemies as "socialists" now.

Every word that comes out of your mouth is some sort of distortion. And I very much doubt you're any kind of Clemson Tiger fan, by the way. That would require you to actually like anything and I very much doubt you can get there. You seem pretty much defined by your contempt for the whole stupid world.

They had no weapons in the Capitol Mall area because they weren't allowed there.

The Oathkeepers had tons waiting off-site. They were going to use a boat to get those guns across the Potomac once stuff got going. There were apparently a number of other outfits that had some trucks there inside the Capitol that also had weapons and explosives, for much the same purpose.

I've wondered if metal detectors were at Trump's rally. It

Mar 4, 2021, 9:06 AM

seems like they would be - but it also seemed like attendees had things (besides guns) that wouldn't have been allowed in.

If it was a coup - it was still a bad one.

"You guys take over The Capitol with no weapons against people that have weapons. Then, we'll come in with the weapons."

I would have a much easier time getting upset about this

Mar 4, 2021, 9:09 AM

if the same people currently feigning outrage didn't spend most of last summer making excuses for the people who looted and burned down most of the small businesses in my old neighborhood in Minneapolis.

with weapons, with multiple deaths

Mar 4, 2021, 9:15 AM

ruining lives, ruining businesses, burning police precincts.

But AOC was SO CLOSE to death that day in a whole other building and actually cried on the floor of the House. That is true bravery on her part.

A Coup with no weapons.......oh wait, the weapons

Mar 4, 2021, 9:13 AM

were across the Potomac, gosh that is sooooooo scary. I sure am glad that we have Police and Secret Service in DC area. Imagine if they had all taken the day off that day.
