Why haven’t the Bulldogs won a Championship since 1980?

Jan 15, 2021, 10:15 AM

They have a top ten sometimes top 5 recruiting class every year. Other teams besides Bama have won championships out of the SEC like LSU, Florida, & Auburn. What’s the missing piece of the puzzle? It sure would be nice to see them win one in the modern era of college football. Is it bad luck? Bad coaching? Is it attitude (i.e. elitist mentality without the trophies)? Just can’t figure it out.

I am very happy with them not winning one ever.

I'm fine with them just as thy are. It was so long ago thy won that no one there remembers their formula for success

Their formula was simple. Cheating via recruiting violations.

Not a whole lot of prestige in a real NC

compared to a Recruiting Championship. They're traditionally more of an "offseason" champ.

develop their players' individual talents into effective teams. It's all well and good to have top 5 recruiting classes but if you can't teach and get the skills out of them then they've been wasted. And definitely their elitist attitude has hurt them thinking that they're a blue blood program when results say otherwise.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Georgia is a good program...

Jan 15, 2021, 10:55 AM

Especially for kids who want to remain relatively close to home and rarely play for championships.

Some football players will remember their high school playing years as the best years of their lives.

Many of them attend UGA.

Their program and fans are about on par with the coots.

A huge part of it is that they ran into some pretty solid dynasties - Tennessee and Florida in the 90s, Florida and Alabama in 00's, and Alabama in the 10's.

Sometimes I wonder if Vince Dooley had some input in getting Alabama off their schedule as a regular opponent after the 1965 season.

their annual schedule. Once we quit being a pushover for them starting in the late 70s they didn't feel like playing us every year. But they can still find time to play a creampuff or two out-of-conference opponent every year - what BS. Am glad we'll be playing them this September - that's the way it should be.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: There are a lot of reasons

Jan 15, 2021, 1:03 PM

Georgia hasn't won championships the last few years because their players are not well conditioned. They usually blow out noncompetitive teams early, but if they play a team with relatively even talent, they don't have anything left late in games.

Look at their linemen, and you'll see big bellies, and you'll see them blowing hard by the middle of the second quarter. Their linemen could do Michelin commercials.

If Smart ever learns to get his players in playing shape, he'll be hard to beat with the talent he gets.

Culture issues inside the program

Jan 15, 2021, 2:46 PM

If they ever got a Dabo type coach who is a true culture and character builder, look out.

It's Georgia.

It will never happen there just like it will never happen at Auburn.

Too many boosters with too much power.

OTOH without the boosters they wouldn't be able to buy players.
