Coach V's Name Mentioned as a Possibility in Austin...

I wouldn’t really worry about that until after his boys graduate.

Even though the transfer portal makes this easier, I don’t think it’s something to worry about right now.

while i hope thats the case. UT would be a tough one to turn

Dec 3, 2020, 12:14 PM

down. The Big 12 is wide open for somebody else to contend. Its usually Oklahoma and thats pretty much it.If Oklahoma doesn't do it no one else does. How Texas can't get it together is beyond me.

The distance from pretender to contender is way shorter at a UT or a USC than a USuC or an Oklahoma State. Plus Coach V is very familiar with the Big 12. Moreso than an SEC or Pac 10 school. If he got offered to be the HC at TExas.. he's gone IMO. They haven't had a winner in 15 years.

The only issue would be if politics has ruined the program to the point of no return... boosters and school officials rule all. Which i think is the problem down there. If he would have to go in and basically change the culture of that..it may be outside of what BV's desires in his first try as HC. They may need a guy like DAbo (like Dabo..not the real Dabo) who loves doing that sort of thing.

The writer is Dan Wolken. A hard lefty who has little first hand info on any job opening. Really more speculation on his part as the Texas billionaires have little tolerance for hiring someone who has never been a HC as they see their job as elite and not a training ground

given the HC's who have flamed out there I suspect a prior HC track record is a must. BV is a grat coach but I dont see him putting up with their politics and big wigs meddling

Dan Wolken and he’s the king of idiots in the world of “sports media”. I trust his knowledge of what’s truthfully happening in sports as much as I’d trust my 4 year old son to explain thermodynamics.
Wolken doesn’t know his rear end from a hole in the ground and I encourage everyone to send him coal for Christmas.

Texas deserves to be 0-10 the way they act.

Herman is a great coach. He is a handful of late-game points from being undefeated - granted I know that is frustrating but you got to keep plugging away and Herman has shown he can win. Look around and name another 4y coach that has done better. Smart and.... yeah. That is it. 2020 stinks, Herman needs to work on his late game fortitude which seems to be a talent depth issue, but jeeze. UT is acting like they want to be UT in Knoxville.

Disagree on Herman

Dec 3, 2020, 6:07 PM

I think he's pretty average as a HC and now his recruiting is trending in the wrong direction this year. Texas is in danger of seeing things swing to A&M again right now as it looks like Jimbo could finish 9-1 this season.

Herman has always been a "big game coach" where he gets his teams up for the big games on the schedule and massively outperform expectations in those games while under-performing in almost every other game on the schedule and usually losing in at least a couple of upsets every year. He's never been consistent and he always struggles to just bury the team that Texas should bury. They play up and down to their competition every week.

Texas has played in 6 one possession games in the Big XII this year with the other being just an 11 point win over Baylor. They've been involved in 3OT games. This is what Herman always does. How can you claim he's unlucky to have lost 3 close games when he's also won 3 or 4 close games?

And it's not just this year. Last year his net scoring margin in Big XII games was +14. Probably about what you would expect from a 5-4 team. Also, 8 of those 9 games were decided by 14 points or less and 5 of them were one possession games. This is what Tom Herman does.

Even in 2018, his supposed "breakthrough" season at Texas, 10 of their 14 games were decided by one possession. Three more were two possession games. Their biggest win of the season was by 23 points. This is what Tom Herman does.

We are also talking about a guy that's previous 3 classes at Texas have been ranked 3rd, 3rd, and 8th. And then you watch Texas play and where are these guys? Outside of Sam Ellinger nobody ever stands out on that team as a stud. Is Herman developing any of these guys?

And next year Texas is faced with replacing Sam Ellinger, the guy that has basically carried the entire team on his back for the last 3+ years. Even if Texas keeps Herman on for next year, i think it's very likely he gets fired during or after the 2021 season.

Re: Disagree on Herman

Dec 3, 2020, 12:19 PM

I think average is too harsh. Really the knock is that he isn't a championship coach (yet). He does not get blown out (which in the B12 - and even nationally is something). he has the potential & his kids don't quit (see the Tommy years)- which is a point - go back and look at Dabo's 2010 year - all but the SC was close L and even then, we were not blowing folks out other than FCS or Duke/Wakes. Texas needs a long-term rebuild and that will set them up for the long term. A&M is gunning for the win now sort because we know what Jimbo does to a program when things aren't easy. I don't think OU will be stable for much longer without Stoops. So does Texas remain patient? I say as long as Hermans kids don't quit, keep him.

Gary tends to have his number but that is the young coach vs a coaching great. So I give him a bit of a pass on the TCU questions.

I am less worried about the recruiting "ranking" -there are always some miffs. It is more important to stay in the top 15. Because you can be top 5 for a few yeares but if you lack somewhere critically: see Jawja at QB, it does not equate to championships. Dabo lived in the 15-20 level in the early mid 2010s built that into a NC. Still if you gave those kids to muscoot or a lesser coach, they would not sniff a top 20 finish. Herman is still developing and you see that. He just needs a

Urban Meyer's name keeps being mentioned

That's where Texas will go if they have a chance. They certainly have the money.

When are these reporters gonna learn to actually do research when posting dumb articles. Both of BV sons are at Clemson. If BV does leave it won’t be until after his true freshman son graduates. These reporters have very little credibility now a days.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I dont think that means Venables absolutely wouldnt leave

Dec 3, 2020, 9:41 AM

His sons could transfer with him and most likely play at the new school next season. Now i will say that's it's entirely possible that he does not want to do that. They may all want to stay together at Clemson at least long enough for the boys to graduate. I don't know. But, given recent NCAA waiver precedent, I don't think his sons being at Clemson is any guarantee of him staying.

I believe we are safe for the next 3 years. I can’t see him leaving while he still has a son on the team.
Even then, he may be perfectly content in his current, well compensated job.

I agree he's not going anywhere until his sons graduate, and hopefully stays much longer. Yes his sons could transfer, but the whole family has roots in Clemson, very very deep roots.

BV is a Bud Foster ....

Dec 3, 2020, 11:48 AM

He loves being a coordinator and knows his personality is better suited for that than a head coach.

There are very very very few great head coaches. Most great coordinators don’t make good head coaches because it’s a completely different skill set.

I truly believe BV is happy as a coordinator and will follow the bud Foster model. I also truly believe he will stay at Clemson as long as Dabo is head coach. When Dabo leaves BV may retire or stay at Clemson depending on how old Dabo is when he retires or becomes AD @ Clemson or Bama and depending on who replaces Dabo, which will probably be a promotion from within, possibly BV himself should he want the job.

Hmm, half of one of the statements in that story immediately made me think of Cooterville.

"Fuente is an excellent coach, and Virginia Tech isn't as good of a job as its fans think it is."

South Carolina FORE SHORE ain't as good a job as its fans think it is. Because, really, if you consider being in the SEC a drawing card, that's really all they got going for them. Even having two Hall of Fame coaches, and landing some of the best recruits that the state of South Carolina ever produced while the Old Ball Sac was there, only got them ONE DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP, and "5th Place Rings."

It is obvious they should stick to the Wimmins Basketaball.

If offered that job, it’s not one you turn down. If Clemson wins the NCG, and Venables is offered, he’s gone. Even if the boys are on the team.
