Can anybody explain how the "extra year" of eligibility

Jan 7, 2021, 9:30 PM

will work next season and beyond? If every player this year gets an extra year, does the number of scholarships go up to 100 ? And does that continue for the following 3 years if this year's freshmen also have 4 years left? I didn't notice teams signing fewer than the normal number in December.

Everyone is getting the extra year. Teams are allowed to go over the 85 limit for the 2021 season. Not sure by how much though.

Next year, seniors who get an additional year after their four years do not count against the 85 scholly limit. After next year the 85 scholly limit is fixed for everyone.

Previously every player had five years to play four seasons. Now every player on the roster has six years to play five seasons if they so choose and the schools want them on the team. Just because a play has a year of eligibility remaining does not mean the school has to provide a scholarship as the player could in theory hit the portal for their final year.

The rub is with the lower classmen. In 2021 the 85 limit is waived but in 2022 the 85 limit is back in place so if this coming years seniors want to stay an extra year then schools would need to sign less players.

The rule was a good one for seniors but IMO it should not have been given to underclassmen.
