Boston Public Schools suspending enrollment in advanced classes
Feb 27, 2021, 9:17 AM
|
|
due to "concerns about equity in the program":
A district analysis of the program found that more than 70 percent of students enrolled in the program were white and Asian, even though nearly 80 percent of all Boston public school students are Hispanic and Black.
However:
The program was open to all students in the Boston Public Schools who took a test known as Terra Nova in the third grade and received a high score. Those students were placed in a lottery conducted by the central administration office, and lottery winners received letters inviting them to apply to the program.

They are offended all of the time. My brother(same Mom different Dad) is half Japanese and my stepdad was Japanese(RIP). Asians take shyatt loads of abuse and they are often offended, but they don't make excuses and they work hard anyway. By the way, on my Mom's side everyone is Jewish. My brother is a rare Japanese Jew. It's kind of funny.

Poor wording. They are too busy studying to make excuses. I realize that is generalizing, but the culture seems to be a very hard working culture. That's a compliment.

even though according to this, they make up about 37% of the town’s population.

That’s pretty crazy. Maybe a lot of private Catholic schools up in Baahstahn.

That’s why I laugh when people say the N.E. has better schools than the south. They are never comparing public to public. They compare standardized test scores. Guess what, private school students take those too.

I wonder everyone would have equal intelligence? Anyway, that author was creative. He should write some scripts. I bet he would do well.

As usual, the complete story is quite a bit different than the headlines (& the subsequent jumping to conclusions.
As JD pointed out: The program was open to all students in the Boston Public Schools who took a test known as Terra Nova in the third grade and received a high score. Those students were placed in a lottery conducted by the central administration office, and lottery winners received letters inviting them to apply to the program.
The school district is concerned that the Terra Nova Test might not be the best criteria for admittance to the Advanced Program and they are suspending its use while they examine other possible criteria. There is also some concern that the lottery is not as fair as it might be. And finally, they are considering more outreach to families whose students qualified but did not enroll in the Advanced Program.
Those students already in the program will continue as before, but the district will take this pandemic year to re-evaluate admissions to the program.

The lottery part seemed to leave too much up to chance. That doesn't seem right too me.

It IS possible for lotteries to be manipulated - possible.

Certainly - pretty much anything can be manipulated. Do you think that happened in this case? Either way, a lottery to determine educational promotion doesn't seem right.

I am speculating here, but I think they probably have more kids qualify (by test scores) than they have spots available so . . . lottery.
Maybe they could create more Advanced Program teachers/spots available as part of their new solution.
