On "Morning Joe," O'Rourke likened efforts by former President Donald Trump and some Republican allies to overturn President Joe Biden's election victory to the failed Beer Hall Putsch coup attempt by Adolf Hitler in 1923.

"The proudest democracy on the face of the planet will become a memory if we do not fight for it right now," O'Rourke said. "So we should take no comfort in the fact that Joe Biden was successfully sworn in, no comfort in the fact that Congress seems to be operating as normal. This thing is on a roll right now, and if you look at the Beer Hall Putsch in Germany, 1923, it was 10 years later Hitler is chancellor. We are operating under the big lie right now in America. We’ve got to stop it. That's up to all of us in this great democracy."

Loathe as I am to agree with Beto on much of anything, I did have that thought myself.

The problem is, they actually sent Adolf off to a stint in the pokey, where he wrote Mein Kemp - "My Struggle" - and had time to reflect on where he'd gone wrong and figure out how to make the harsh medicine go down easier. The next time around, he came locked and loaded with an alternate government ready to roll from Minute 1; when he got himself elected (legally, this time), he switched over to Nazi mode, and it was on before anybody even really realized he was coming.

Come to think of it, that's actually a scary parallel, since Trump struggled his whole first term trying to figure out how to actually get ahold of the levers of government. If he actually got ahold of the thing again I'm fairly sure he'd get ahold of it much faster this time around since he actually knows where they are now.

Shiver.
