They had much better teams under Frank McGuire ...

But back then you couldn't get bounced in the opening round of your conference tournament and still receive a #7 seed in the NCAAs. It was win the conference or go home.

You do know that their number one player was benched for this game! No way theTigers win that game if Thornwell plays

Yes, I do know that but I think you're talking to OP, no ?

My post had nothing to do with the outcome of our game against SCAR this season.
I will say however, that we'll never know what would have happened if Thornwell suits up against us this year.
We can make assumptions, but we'll never know for sure.

"No way theTigers win that game if Thornwell plays"
That is purely conjecture on your part and based no way in reality or fact.
Take that #### to FGF if you want to spew it.

They were actually a much better team ...

... quite probably national champs except for an upset to NC State in the ACC tourney finals with John Roache slowed with a severe ankle injury. Only the ACC champs went to the dance back then.
Now we can argue all day as to whether athletes in general are "better" today than they were in the past simply because they are bigger, faster, stronger, etc.
But, I stand by my statement. The 1970 SCAR team vs the competition they faced and beat, was miles ahead of this year's SCAR team vs who they've faced and beaten.
Even with Sindarious Thornwell at full speed, the 2016-17 Gamecocks were unceremoniously bounced in the before the finals of the SEC tourney to unranked Arkansas and then gifted with an extremely favorable #7 seed in the NCAAs.

They would be average now. Basketball has advanced.

There are way better athletes now. How many black guys were even on that team? Look at this way, how many white Americans will go in the first round of the NBA draft.

That's sort of like saying Pete Maravich would be "average"

That's sort of like saying Pete Maravich would be "average" today.
He would not be average. If he returned in his prime he would be "lights out" just like he was back in the day
And so would John Roache, Tom Riker, et al.
Ditto for Skip Wise.

Some would still be great. We are talking teams.

Pistol Pete wouldn't dominate as much though, even if he were still great. Moreover, he is just one guy. The game has progressed. That USCjr team back in the day would get blown out by this year USCjr team. They would get dominated on the glass.

hoops would agree with you. The players are faster, wayyyy bigger, etc etc. You're probably just being nostalgic. Fair enough though. We don't have to agree.

It was Alabama wasn't it? Another SEC bottom dweller.

At any rate, what most of us here remember is that Clemson beat South Carolina in ... basketball ... football ... soccer ... and baseball ... all this year! Maybe golf too, but who keeps up with all that?

If I were them I wouldn't care, nor would I remember.

I a sure they don't. They were without the SEC player of the year. Moreover, even if they had everyone it still wouldn't matter with the great season they have had I am sure they don't even care. Our win was a novelty at best as this stage.

Basketball and baseball are postseason sports. What happens in the regular season is irrelevant

You have to have the records to get into the postseason. If the regular season was irrelevant, Clemson would be in the big dance every year.

It's not a fair comparison because of differences in the tournament format. In McGuires years, the field was so much smaller. Winning a conference title was essential in making the tournament. The field is so much larger with 68 teams. It's much easier to make it now. Teams now are more athletic but teams like McGuire had were better fundamentally. I'm glad we beat the chickens but they will forget about that loss if they win it all. Anyone remember our loss to Pitt? We remember the natty.

With all due respect I will take a Final Four appearance over a Clemson win any day of the week. And yes we did lose to Arkansas in the SEC tournament but they proved that they were a really good team and almost beat the Tarholes which some may argue was given to them by the refs. I also think that we don't lose that game with Thornwell playing.
